Re: Gun Control

I suppose if I lived in the States I'd have a gun as well, from what I'm reading here.
For what it's worth, I can say with certainty that your average Canadian does not have a gun in their home for personal protection. Why? No need to. Why? No risk. Why? Theres no guns (or so few of them) used in violent crimes. Sure theres the odd murder and even the odd home invasion, but not enough to warrant getting a gun. Nobody has bars on their windows. Most people probably don't even bother to lock their doors when at home. I know I don't. (Even when I lived in the country's largest city)

I have a lot of respect for the tough job law enforcement has in the US, knowing that every with every possible routine traffic stop they could get shot. Here its unthinkable.

PS-After spending 1 Billion on the gun registry here in Canada the gun death rate remained unchanged this year over last.
PSS-Grampa-They didn't confiscate the guns. Sure if the weapon was restricted, or your background didn't check out-perhaps, but they didn't confiscate all the guns. Thats incorrect info.

Re: Gun Control

toad sorry for the confusion. I was refering to the countries that have confiscated the guns, they all started with manditory registration. I would hate to think it could happen in the US. but with that much history to look at it makes me not want to give an inch on this issue just in case.

Kenny, what in the world are you trying to spell?
Sound it out......... and remember to clap out your syllables. ;)

Some of us that have been here a while have heard these conversations before. It seems when these conversations get re-hashed, there are "new" members that give their perspective. Just because we have heard it before doesn't mean they have. Lets give them a chance to post their views on this subject without saying, "Weve heard this before".

My .02, and its probably worth less than that. :D

Re: Gun Control

Homer & Ken - Thanks for letting me hear it from the owners point of view. That's what I was searching for.

Its tough to make a decision on an issue based on what is said by those who stand to make a buck, ya know what I mean? I like to leave my decision and mind open to both sides until I hear it from those that will be affected in a way other than their wallet. I believe money can corrupt the best of us. This is my philosophy on all issues, always consider the source. My profession is in finance so I've learned a great deal about statistics.

Rule #1 in statistics: "What number do you want to see?"

Sad, but it is that simple. The numbers can be easily manipulated to give you whatever number you want to see. First you consider your audience, then you make the number match what you want to say. Always consider the source, and always be skeptical.

Grandpas toy:

You are certainly welcome, and although it seems at times that there is an "old freinds reunion" us newbies are always welcome! However it does seem that we have to go through an initiation period!! Or was that just me???

Wow, this thread really took off!!!

Now I will give my thoughts!!

Personally I wouldnt give you 10c for an assult weapon"?? But I would fight for your right to have one!

Is it just because they are small and look different??? And Black!

If I wanted to commit a crime with the need to spray bullets that fast, I can guarantee you that I could modifi a hunting rifle in one day that would do the same thing! I could paint it black too! Cut off the barrel and stock and be able to put it under my jacket!

Again, its not the type of gun or the gun for that matter that kills, Its the lack of a brain and your finger! I know, Lets outlaw triggerfingers! Lets have all the male babies born have there trigger fingers cut off! Crude, but makes as much sence as getting rid of guns!!

LubeDude

Re: Gun Control

Please consider that firearms legislation bills, etc, seem dependant on which of the two major political parties are in office. As an example, Prez Bush just signed to extend the law banning all plastic firearms that can not be detected by xray, etc. This was done quietly, not much media attention I saw. And a responsable decision on Bushes part imo considering the current climate.

Seems to me that when the Democratic Party is in the White House and or a majority in Senate/Congress firearm legislation is much more prevelant.

To some degree this leads me to conclude that the "control-or-ban" issue is a political "prop" that the Democrat Party uses to case build. More or less an issue that gets the party headline exposure. Think about this. I do recall in receint past decade where Democratic Pols were exposed owning as well as caring handguns. Same folks who publicly opposed citizen ownership of firearms.

Remember fatso Rossie O, who professes to be anti gun, being exposed as haveing armed body guards in her employ to "protect" her children.

In closing, I view the firearm issue in America as more of a political tool than a public safety issue.

Re: Gun Control

again, usually don't get involved in these topics. but i'll admit i don't even see the issue. no reason to own a gun, no desire to own one, etc. i don't live in the woods where i need to hunt my next dinner. of course, being in the military i've fired them all, and have used them for the only valid reason- to protect you. that's about it. there is no way possible we could outlaw all weapons and be worse off. if we took weapons out of the hands of everyone, i'd feel a lot safer. canada has it right for once :)
