Anybody involved with the Jimmy Cater 2004 Habitat for Humanity projects in Puebla and Veracruz starting October 25th.
I understand there is a waiting list for non-Mexican participants, however it sounds like there is a poor turn out from here.
I'm going to be at the Puebla project and look forward to meeting anyone who will be there.

Re: Habitat for Humanity

Well, I will no longer contribute to Habitat for Humanity!

I was always under the impression that this charity was working to help citizens of the United States, NOT Mexico!

I hate it when I'm decieved by a charity organization!

That only leaves my local fire dept., as a charity I'll contribute to!

waiting list for non-Mexican participants?????? is that for those doing the work or those recieving a house. If its the first well then I guess they dont need any help, if its the later, Sounds to me like discrimination.

Hmmm.

HFH is a wonderful organization and Jimmy Carter is on my list of truly great men, a position I once thought was about as likely as Nader getting elected.

Since when are Mexicans not part of Humanity, Kenny?

Re: Habitat for Humanity

Well JB,

I was never made aware of the fact that the monies that I sent to Habitat for Humanity was going for any other purpose, other than helping those in the United States!

I do not support charities that send the monies to foreign countries!

I invest my charity monies to organizations that help American citizens in the USA, and the USA only!

Its my belief, no one elses.

I don't want the money I donate to go to a foreign country, thats all!

And, it's my money that is being donated, so I think I should have a say as to where it will be spent.

I won't buy a foriegn massed produced car either!

Why should I prromote a foriegn economy, when the USA economy needs all the help it can get!

Same with the charities, why would I help someone in some foriegn country, when my fellow countrymen and woman need the help.

And, I still hate Jimmy Carter as much as I did, when he was my Commander In Chief!

It's my opinion, and I'm entitled to it!

It's my money, and I don't want it spent in a foriegn land!

You are correct Kenny, you are certainly entitled to donate as you see fit.

Perhaps a local dontation stays local. Read more here.

http://www.habitat.org/

I found this:

Note: Local Habitat for Humanity affiliates are separate nonprofit organizations, independent of HFHI, and therefore are not included in HFHI's form 990. For further information, see the financial statement file above.

Ken

You are certainly entitled to put your money where you choose, Kenny.

There is some question whether your money is going to Mexico. Worth investigating.

My money goes wherever it does the most good for the most people.

Re: Habitat for Humanity

There's a HFH home going up a few blocks from me. Thing's a foot thick of styrofoam. Oughta be able to heat that thing with a candle. Don't know if it's for a migrant family or an American one, but a good cause is a good cause. Migrants put a lot of food on our tables, folks. Many take the jobs we wouldn't want.

Re: Habitat for Humanity

Like him or not as president, Jimmy Carter is the ONLY former president in my lifetime (b. 1944) who has done anything worthwhile in his "after life." I believe HFH is one of the finest non-profits in existence. And, yes indeed, it is most certainly international. HFH has even built homes for Native Americans. And, Jimmy Carter has put it on the map where it belongs IMHO.

tcube

Re: Habitat for Humanity

If you are a new home owner a Habitat for Humanity is a great project to get involved in. Our church does one week every year on a house. It is fun and very educational on all the different aspects of building a house.

Re: Habitat for Humanity

Wow, just returned from a weekend trip and am surprised at some of the comments!
Kenny, if you are donating to Habitat for Humanity I believe your money stays in the US as all of the projects outside of US are run by Habitat for Humanity International. Regardless they are both one of the best run charities and have helped countless families around the world.

The waiting list is for non-Mexican volunteers, typically, American, Canadian & Europeans who on top of volunteering time, have to pay their own travel & accommodation costs. I am disappointed there are not more Mexican volunteers, however the new home owners and their families are all involved in the building of their homes and any in the future.
Luckily the weather is mild enough that the houses are very basic and do not require insulation but it still amazes me that they can build 150 homes in 5 days!
Anyone interested in reading how it is all done can see this handbook:
http://www.habitat.org/jcwp/2004/JCWP04VolMn_eng_f.pdf

Re: Habitat for Humanity

Lost Canadian, I was just suprised that they put volunteers on a waiting list. It would be my guess that many on the waiting list tend to find other places or things to volunteer for. On the otherhand mision trips are handled the same way and nobody complains...........thanx for the link. :)

Re: Habitat for Humanity

I personally agree with everyone and their opinions. I believe that we should help everyone, both foreign and domestic. I do also think that it is sad we send millions even billions into other countries to help their needy. We have charities daily showing on TV how bad conditions are in other countries and showing us starving children in other countries. I want just once to see something of the people in this country in the same position. Do they really expect us to forget about the poor and hungry disanvantaged people here in our own home? We should also be allowed to choose where our donations go.
Just curious, how much of the money donated to other countries actually gets to those it is intended for and how much goes to that countries government? Finally how can we expect to, or rightfully help other countries when we have all of the problems here at home? It is a terrible injustice to look in our own towns and ignore the problems while we send money out of this country to fix the exact same problems for someone else.
If your children were hungry would you spend your money on the neighbors children, or feed your own first?
