My boat is powered by an '87 3.0 Cobra. I have a thread running in the engines section regarding an overheat issue. Well, I've had enough of dealing with this overheat, with Cobra shift issues, parts availability, etc. I want to unload this OMC p.o.s. albatross, tear it down & sell it for parts. Anyone ever done this? I'm looking to make a few bucks so I can repower with an SEI drive. Every little bit will help as the SEI will cost me around 2 grand. Is it worth the trouble to tear the damn thing down, or should I just make an anchor out of it or even sell it for scrap? And I'm not bashing OMC's. I'm just fed up with mine. Thanx for chiming in.

Like you said, you are having a tough time finding parts for it, so there is definitely a market out there for it. Part it out, you may be surprised what you might get. If anything it's better than 0 towards a new drive.

you might try posting an ad for OMC parts on CL...and see what the response is...no sense tearing it apart until someone wants to buy a piece of it.....just list the parts you know are good...the pen is mightier than the wrench...lol

If you're having a tough time finding parts ??. You're looking in the WRONG places.

As I said before I can still get ANY part for my Cobra's !!. :).

NO !!! Its powered by a GM motor with the OMC name on it. :)

I know this a last thing you want to hear now but, your cobra's impeller won't pull water from bucket, the drive has to be submerged initially, the impeller housing has a purge hose to expel trapped air once it's dunked, running it from a bucket with a level merely above the intake will not suffice.
Go ahead kick me now!

I should have been clearer. Yea, I can get parts. But, need patience as most everything needs to ordered, with the associated shipping charges, wait times, time spent tracking them down, etc.

No, I'll kick myself if you're right. So, next time I get a chance I'm going to dunk it & see what happens.
