Ok...friend came over yesterday and Helped me trouble shoot my engine. Well..it turns out that my left side of the powerpack won't fire. I basically have no spark on 3 cylinders. All on the same side.
?? I would assume that I lost half my powerpack and only the right side is firing? NOthing else could cause this to function this way?? Reason being...I called the local dealer and it is 200 for my pack.
I just wanna make sure before I throw the money out there.
Also...since I'm on the subject. Can anyone recommend a place with a better price? I have a johnson 2001 2 stroke, carburated 60 degree V-6. Thx for your help!!! :)

I'm thinking maybe the timer base (trigger) but I'm not a mechanic so better wait for one of the pros to chime in.

Check the shift interupter switch and its wiring to see if it is shorted, causing the loss of spark on 3 cylinders. A bad stator can do the same thing, also.

Thx guys for the quick help. When you mean "shorted". You mean if the swtich is shorting to ground?? Also...more or less by where is the swtich located? Sorry for the question, but it's the first time I tackle one of these.

Which side doesn't have fire. The shift interupt switch will kill power to the starboard side. Disconnect it and see if you get fire.

The shift switch is on the stb. side, attached to the same arm as the shift cable. Trace the black/yellow wires from the switch to the pack. They can and do stick or short to ground, giving you the same symptoms as you described.

Depending on the year, they kill either the stb. or the port bank of cylinders. Later models kill the port bank.

ok....if you're outside standing in back of the engine, looking at the tell tail. The boat being infront of you....it would be the port( left)side that is not firing. all 3 cylinders.

hey....you guys Rock! If I personally would of known you Seahorse...I would of bought you a bottle of Tequila. IT's the switch. I disconnected it on top where the plug is and attached a spark plug tester to test the dead bank. THe side that wasn't firing....came alive and I got spark. WHEW.....Looks like It's just a bad switch.
ONe question...could the shifting levers be misaligned? A couple of months back I have to get at the shift shaft to replace my impeller. I fear that I have have left something loose or misaligned. BUt then again...I went out several times before this problem happened.

Hey, glad you found the problem, and the best part it is over $100 cheaper than a powerpack.

Sometimes corrosion can make the switch stick ON, instead of ON and Off when shifting.

Look at that silver stamped steel lever from the back of the motor to make sure you do not see a bend on it. It is common where there was stiff linkage, or someone shifted the motor without it running and forced the shift lever. If you've had a boatload of kids at one time or another, I'd almost guarantee it.

To make sure your shift rod height from the gearcase is correct, that silver shift lever should be parallel with the crankshaft when in neutral.

DB, I took off the lower cowl today to get a good look at the linkage and stuff, since my switch came in today and I had the time (vacation). THe silver stamped lever has two bolts in the back that secure it to the engine. Mine were Loose :eek:You will see that the shaft pivots at one end (front part) and on the other end is the switch(back part). So...being that this bar is loose...this could be causing your problems. Good luck buddy!!
