I just got to thinking.....
The oil pressure sender is on the back of the block on top and there is another sensor by the oil filter that I figured was the low oil pressure alarm sensor????
Could the water of grounded that out giving me a false low oil pressure alarm???

I was thinking something similar, but the water did not get that high, right?

It did get as high as the oil filter. The water level was at or above where the oil pan bolts to the block.

So did you get any fines with that safety check?

And I am curious as to what authority they have to check a vessel prior to in-the-water?

Not that I would stop them or turn them away from doing a safety check but if they wanted to fine me, I might bring up the legality of issuing a fine when I am not yet in the water.

No fines. They almost made me go get new numbers before I launched though.

i still think it was an alarm tied to your bilge pump. you said you weren't sure if it was automatic? really something you want to know. just check it out, find the pump and see if there is a float connected. if so, raise it by hand and see if an alarm goes off. could be that simple.

safety checks are just that... done for safety. you probably "accepted" one without even knowing it. but they are good, everyone should get one done. no fines come from them, just "suggestions". and then you get a cool sticker if you pass... which does prevent future stops/boardings sometimes.

It?s just that a courtesy check. They have to ask for your consent before proceeding. If they find you in violation they will give you a check list of items found and give you a breif safety lecture. Now if you?re found in violation and then proceed to put the boat in the water and leave the dock your fair game for the CC to board and fine.

Around here its not if you get boarded it?s when you get boarded. Unless you have a CC inspection sticker clearly visible you will get stopped and boarded. I actually call the CC and have them come to my house to do my yearly inspection and get my new sticker before fishing season begin in March.

I hope you guys are talking about "courtesy" safety checks by the local Coast Guard Auxillary.
Not the full fledged Coast Guard.

I can not imagine that you can get the regular CG to come to your house for a safety check and decal.

I bet the safety check done at the ramp prior to launch was by the local auxillary, not the very busy CG regulars.

Last year my wife and I had our granddaughter with and went to the lake to just tool around. Lets just say it throws off your normal routine. We were out and the boat seemed alittle doggy. When the granddaughter asked " grandpa, why is there water in the boat", I grabbed the plug and jumped in.

Kinda like forgetting to put the kickstand down. Everyone does it at one time or another.

That's correct. It's the CC Auxiliary that provides this service.

Last week we had a 100? plus CC Cutter anchored out on the fishing grounds while they ran around in Zodiacs and boarded a large number of both commercial and private vessels in the area. They also had DNR officials in tow so I would imagine that they where teaming up to catch poachers.
