Washington's Birthday! Washington's birthday! It was originally Washington's birthday, but has become another day to shop.

As far as Washington's birthday goes, Matthew Spaulding, a Heritage Foundation scholar, reminds: "Although it was celebrated as early as 1778, and by the early 19th Century was second only to the Fourth of July as a patriotic holiday, Congress did not officially recognize Washington's Birthday as a national holiday until 1870. The Monday Holiday Law in 1968—applied to executive branch departments and agencies by Richard Nixon's Executive Order 11582 in 1971—moved the holiday from February 22 to the third Monday in February. Section 6103 of Title 5, United States Code, currently designates that legal federal holiday as 'Washington's Birthday.' Contrary to popular opinion, no action by Congress or order by any President has changed 'Washington's Birthday' to 'President's Day'."

Are you a native of this country, or a naturalized citizen? What happened between 1870 and 1968? Your explanation leaves a lot out with regard to the new designation. Perhaps you were just born in the last half of the last century. No wonder the Republicans feel so put upon. ;)

Re: Happy? Presidents Day?

It became PC to call it "Presidents' Day" when Lincoln's Birthday (2/12) was dropped from the National Holiday list in favor of MLK Jr. Day.

The idea was that they would pretend to have merged the Washington's Birthday Holiday with the Lincoln's Birthday Holiday.

No disrespect intended to Dr. King, but I objected (and still do) to dropping Lincoln's Birthday.

I also object to the Monday mandate. If we are going to celebrate an anniversary we should do it on the anniversary date.

At least we get to celebrate Independence Day on July 4th. For a while there it was on a Monday also.

Perhaps we need to change the name of the King holiday to Humanitarian Day.

I believe Chief is laying claim to today not the actual birthday of George Washington. Traditionally stated as the 22nd of February.
