There was a post before about a guy with a hard starting 5.5 Rude (Maybe a Johnny..can't remember). I have a super hard cold start 61 5.5 Johnson. Been through everything. Had to squirt premix in the airbox first time cold (fine when warm). Stumped. Scott mentioned the fiber washer over the main jet. Well, I had a easy start 2hp Mate, and its started fine, but ran rich because of a deteriorated washer. Mine looked good, so I didn't think much of it. Well, it was on the bench, so I pulled the carb again. Even though it looked good, and I had no spare, I put 3 Orings in instead..
4th pull...thanks Scott..never doubt those who know!

Very cool. Are you saying that it was missing the fiber washer on the drain plug that's past the high speed jet? Seems that if it's missing a washer, that lets the drain plug screw seat further, and could push up against the jet, sealing off gas flow. Is that what you're saying?

There was another guy that posted the 60's Evinrude Sportwin carb problems thread and he found that the three small ports in the carb throat behind the lower core plug were totally blocked. It caused his engine to not idle and surge until he got up to speed. What's odd to me is that it looks like there's no port feeding gas or air to those 3 tiny ports, but they are apparently important like that fiber washer.

Yeah, that was the post. And no the washer was there, it had just compressed enough to not do its job I guess. I also think someone before me had replaced the bowl gasket, which would now be thicker, thus keeping the fiber washer from sealing.
Damn little things in life can drive ya nuts!
Now I gotta tear the lower off (which involves a head pull) for a seal job...milky...be a great motor when I get it fixed right
