Hard starting 1981 Merc 260

My 1981 Merc 260 (carburated) has a very difficult time starting when cold. Takes alot of cranking. Once it starts I have to run it a minute at at 1000 RPM to keep it running then it runs fine.

Suggestions?

Thanks for the advice. Will be working on it this weekend. Will post results.

every boat is a little different, like bubba said a good shot of fuel first, some people go one squirt some two, back to neutral, turn engine over, be prepared to pump accelarater/ throttle alittle till it catches.
but make sure your choke is working and not hanging up.
