We had one just like this, 1975 Olds Delta 88 with a 5.7 Olds V8 and the Turbohydramatic 400 trans. It had the 4bbl Quadrajet just like my boat but had the hot air heated choke which sucked air through a passage in the intake manifold heated by the exhaust cross over. Worked great, in temps down to zero * F.

And we had one just like this, with a 5.7 Chevrolet with a Rochester 2bbl and the same exact divorced choke used by OMC, Merc and Volvo.

Lovely old school yank classic there. Love it.
Simple but clever idea, to be fair to that choke system. Mine used to stick on occasion, on my 4 barrel. My mooring is in a viscous fast flowing river. To get to the Loch, I had to get up the river first. The thought of the engine chucking it and not starting after flooding, is a scary one. 2 secs and you’re in real trouble in that river. Just had to make sure I suppose. That’s the main reason I did what I did really.

That's funny, my folks had the same '75 Olds but with the 455 cu.in. engine!

Thanks for all your valuable input people. It gives me lots to investigate. Boats still wrapped up for the winter but will be getting into it in March. I'll post back when I get some answers or maybe more questions lol!
