Re: Hard starting 6hp Evinrude

Replaced plugs, had plug wires and coil checked, all was good. Friend suggested i should take carbuetor off and clean also as the motor sat for a few years. I took it apart and blew out orifices. Put all back together, pulled out choke, started on second pull, thought I had cured the hard starting problem. Seems I created a new problem, runs for about 10 seconds and dies, I have to choke again to start. In order to keep running I have to feather the choke. Wondering what I did to create this, also smokes alot more than it used to.

Sounds like it still isn't as clean as it should be, sounds like it's still dirty. What condition is the fuel line, new? Old dry ethenol rotted lines will reclog a carb in seconds.

Having to feather the choke means you have a carb problem.
Did you get the low speed jet set correctly?

Fuel lines look to be original, was told that the motor sat for about five years. The tank hose is new, do I just need to replace the short line coming of the carb? As far as the low speed jet, not sure which one that is, I blew things out but didn't touch any adjustments. Could I have messed up the float some how?

Replace the lines, low speed is the needle in the top of the carb. Float- is the carb leaking gas when you squeeze the bulb, does the bulb not get hard? Did you replace the float? If so is it installed correctly?

if ethanol blended fuels have recently been introduced in your region, could be a problem with the old fuel lines and and other rubber fuel system components not being alcohol-resistent.
