Hard Starting After Running Fuel Tank Dry...

Perhaps a dumb question, but should I expect a 1974 115HP Johnson to be hard to start after I run my fuel tank (and my carbs) dry? I was really starting to sweat it out watching my battery volts decay with each start attempt after switching tanks. I pumped the fuel ball until it was hard, but it still gave me fits.

erau85 How clean is the tank you ran dry? Or better yet how dirty was the tank you ran dry? My guess is you dirty up the carbs, with poop from the tank.
steve

I don't think it was crud from the tank. I emptied the tanks myself and started with fresh fuel. Tank looked good (from what I could see) inside.
It was acting like a fuel starved engine. Cranked & cranked but no light-off. I was just wondering if this was a normal problem after running tanks dry.

You've got to remember, that's a two stroke, not a four. When you run it out of fuel, everything is empty. The carbs, the crankcase, the fuel by-passes, cylinders, everything, so ya gotta choke tha livin' **** out of it. You'll think you're gonna flood it but it'll start first.

c/6
Hooty

MAYBE IF YOU DON'T LET YOUR TANK RUN DRY YOU WILL BE OK.

Earu85,
check to make sure you didn't suck anything in the lines. If you get something small in the lines, it could act like its starving. Take a small squirt bottle or something of the sort and put a little gas in the carb. DON'T use ether. See if it will start after that. It should be good.

On any non oil injected motor when it runs out of fuel, it runs out of oil too.

Lets take compression.

Check your fuel filter screen, if there is nothing there as far as trash, take the fuel connector (engine end) off the hose and make sure you are getting fuel through it,pump it into something glass so you can tell if there is water in there,i got bad gas one time with water in it,just a hint (don't gas up when the fuel delivery truck is there), I have never had any trouble getting restarted after running out of fuel. Once you get it started grab a cold one and have fun. :D
