I have a Mercury 75, 7.5 hp from the late seventies(1977?). Canadian serial number is 7106267.

It runs well. Idles smoothly and WOT is smoth also.

It is difficult to start. Once it starts, it will restart easily. After about
30 minutes of rest, it is difficult to start again.

Here is what I've tried:

1. Checked primer bulb. It pumps gas and gets hard. Pumped while underway. No difference.

2. Checked fuel filter. It was clean but I cleaned it anyway.

3. Checked plugs. They are new and were clean. Cleaned them and regapped them.

4. Treated with Deep Creep. Idles even better now.

5. When running, checked for spark. Will run with either plug wire disconnected. Nice blue flame on both plugs.

6. No spark when it doesn't start. If I pull the starter over and over and over, it will eventually come to life and run great.

It seems by conincidence but if I pull the motor up and drop it, it sometimes will restart.

I'm completely stumped. If it were the powerpack, I'm thinking it will either work or not. I can run the motor for 30 minutes and it will start right back up. Wait awhile and it will not start.

I'm thinking stator? But the spark is so good when it runs, that I'm not sure about that either.

Fishing season is here. I need this to work.....

Any ideas?

Tx.

Joe

Re: Hard Starting Mercury 7.5

Some 7.5 mercs have a 2 peice choke butterfly that is spring loaded, the spring will get weak or break and then the choke does not function properly, in some cases the choke cable adjustment has slipped and don't hold the choke completely closed

I checked the choke. It functions fine. The butterfuly fully closes.

I'm more concerned about not having any spark when it doesn't start.

I disconnected the plug wire and pulled the starter. I did not see a spark.

Does anyone have any other advice?

Tx.

Joe

Could the spark be intermittent?

I'm thinking that probably not.

What causes an engine to flood?

Tx.

Joe

Does anyone have an opinion?

Sorry, I usually get a great response...

Tx.

Joe

Check the lines for small cracks, when I had a slight crack in a fuel line I was having similar issues. I think maybe the fuel pump wasn't priming properly because it sucked a little air until things got moving.

I didn't see it right away becasue the line was burried underneath the carb. And it didn't spray when I squeezed the primper bulb.

Re: Hard Starting Mercury 7.5

Would a small crack in the line along the way cause it to not start at times yet start right away after a shutdown?

I'm thinking that maybe you might be right in that the fuel may evaporate in 30 minutes but why when I pump the bulb again, it won't start?

Sucking air?

Joe

Re: Hard Starting Mercury 7.5

I am having intermittant starting problems with my 1973 7.5hp Mercury as well. I am waiting to see if anyone has any great ideas to try...someone said I should try and remove the kill switch lead as it may be "leaking" causing the motor to not start...makes sense to me...I am gonna try it and I will let you know how the outcome is....later.

There are two wires going up below the flywheel above the carb. I once had a problem with one of those wires getting stripped by the throttle linkage and grounding on the starboard recoil support at a certain throttle position. Check that and basically check for any stripped, cracked, or rotten wires/terminals. Sounds electrical to me. Saskatoon, start a new thread, you have a different ignition system from steam_mill.
Eric

Also check for continuity through the coils with a micrometer. And check if your plugs are clean, you could be running rich and your plugs are two fouled to start after sitting.

That's funny that you say my motor is of a different year. My s/n is 7009691 and it too is Canadian.
