I HACE A 20 YEAR OLD MERC WHICH HAS ALWAYS BEEN HARD STARTN, EVEN AFTER I HAVE RUN IT FOR 30 MINUTES IT TAKES 10 PULLS TO GET IT RESTARTED, TOOK IT OUT AFTER SITTING FOR 6 MONTHE AND COULDNT GET IT STARTED, SO SHOT SOME STARTER IN THE CARB AND IT RAN FOR 2 OR 3 SECONDS, UNTIL THE STARTED BURNED UP I GUESS, COULD THE FLOAT BE STUCK OR SOMETHING ELSE

Hey Woolly,
Since it started with the starter fluid (not a good idea to use by the way - no lube in it) it's probably a carb problem. I'd pull & clean it.
Backlash

Good advice. To pinpoint it futher, take the fuel line off the carb.
Pull it thru, and see if gas squirts-out.

If not, the fuel pump is bad,or not getting fuel to it.

If it does, the problem is inside the carb.
Some of these mercs have the fuel pump built-into the carb, so iether way, the carb must be removed to get at the problem.
You will probably need the manual,as carbs are finicky, and must be set "Just so".
One thing that won't be in the book (a tip from me to you).. Turn the idle mixture screw cockwise until it bottoms-out (DO NOT TIGHTEN), while counting the turns.Write this number down so you don't forget it. This way,you can put it back in,and set it to where it was back when it ran great...No guesswork.
