anyone know where i can purchase a good hydraulic steering unit? currently i have a teleflex dual cable system that i just recently had installed. costed me $500 for new cables and installation, and the steering is still extremely tight. i have a 18' 1988 baker open bow with a 150 merc xr4 v6. the place i took it too had to remove the engine, rotate it a few degrees just to get the cables on and reinstall the engine. that just tells me that the cables are binding from where it comes out of the back to the engine. so the only remedy i can think of is to go hydraulic. i've found that baystar makes a system, but have not been able to find one under $600. any info would be greatly appreciated if you know of any other hydraulic systems out there for a good price. :D

Re: HARD STEERING

E-bay for hydraulic steering bargains

mine steers as smooth as silk. maybe you need to set the steering trim tab? and possibly lubricate
everything should turn nice with new cables

BTW I just went throught the same repairs on mine
I went for a new Helm and cable cost me 140.00
and took a few minutes to install

Took me days to get the Damn old cable out of the tilt tube.

after screwing with it for days I just removed the entire tilt tube

Re: HARD STEERING

when i removed my cables (old ones) from the helm, the helm spun freely. had the new ones installed. then i removed one cable (new one) from the helm to see if it was just one cable that was binding. still hard as hell to turn the wheel. did the same for the other cable (new one). both had the same result, even with it all lubed up. then i disconnected the rods at the engine and the engine swung either direction with no effort.
the boat shop i went to said that the best thing to get is hydraulic steering. he pointed out that the angle of the cables comming out of the back of the boat to the engine was binding the cables, thus hard steering. i think it was a bad design.
went to the boat show and found a boat with a hydraulic system, man-o-man, what a difference!!!
is there a way i can email you some pics of my boat? its hard to explain whats going on unless i can get you some pics of the cables and engine.
