Hard to start 1984 Evinrude 15hp

Hard to start at first even with new plugs and fresh fuel and using chock. After it does start runs great and starts on first pull rest of day and next few days. Let it sit a week and hard to stat again. What could it be?

what exactly are your starting procedures, set by set. usually human error.

I make sure the gas bulb is pumped up and tank vent open. Pull out chock and start pulling rope. I will leave the chock out for 5 pulls then push it in for a few pulls. Pull the chock back put and keep pulling just about the time I think it isn't going to start, it does. Remainder of the day starts on first pull usually without chock.

I have an 82 - 15 and I would ask you to add the fallowing to your proceedure. Maybe you already do but didn't mention it. Make sure you have the motor in neutral. Give it lots of throttle. I say lots because my marks are worn off and it starts better with too much throttle than not enough. With the choke out, at the first sign of any igniton what so ever, push the choke in and pull again. Mine always starts the first pull after a hint of ignition. Usually about two pulls choke out and one pull after it's in. It usually starts one the first pull the rest of the day unless it's been sitting for several hours. If I go more pulls it's almost always because I'm in gear or forgot to give it throttle. Best of luck. Rick.

Sorry tgjohn. Upon reflection I push the choke in 1/2 way in after the first sign of ignition. Not all the way in. Once the motor starts I push the choke all the way in. Rick.

Your 15 should have a tiny tube in the carb that runs fuel from the bowl up to the idle circuit. After a period of time this tube rots and falls off. R&R the carb, install a carb kit that includes the tube.

The '84 doesn't have that carb w/ the tube. Those are late '88+. Could be your carb needs a good soak to clean out some of the choke airways though.
