Just seems like someone would make a adapter for wire harnesses, so you could just plug and play from Yammy to OMC or visa versa...not sure why this does not exist..someone could sell a whole lot of them.

Re: harness adapter

They don't because the demand is not there. It it was they would exist. Besides, there would need to be so many of them that the cost would be prohibitive. Take Yamaha for example. Do you think ALL Yamaha cables coming from the engine to control box are the same? A DFI engine set up for digital gauges and data are different than those for a carbed engine. That's just one example. Now do that for all engines from one manufacturer and multiply those by the number of engine manufacturers. If you still feel this is a great opportunity -- there ya go. Your chance to be the next millionaire. Fact is, if you need to make this conversion, by a junk OMC control box to get that connector, Remove the plug from the Yamaha harness and splice on the OMC making sure you have each circuit matched as required. Plug it up and go.

Re: harness adapter

yea I have some OMC stuff laying around, I just do not want to cut my Yammy harness up and a used one is still pricey..just seems like you could make such a harness and sell it for $50-75 and make some real money..of course I may see..anyone know where I can get some blank connectors for yammy and OMC? I cant seem to find anything like that.

Re: harness adapter

I understand you don't want to cut the Yamaha harness. But there is a way to do this neatly. Cut the harness about 1 foot from the connector. Attach bullet connectors to the wires. Attach the mating bullets to the yamaha connector and save it in case you ever go back to yamaha. Cut the OMC end off a junk cable and attach mating bullets to it. You now have an OMC and a Yamaha compatible harness. The other consideration you may have is that the control boxes between manufacturers are not always compatible in the area of "control throw". What that means is the lever on an OMC box may not move the same distance as a Yamaha box and vice versa. There is no adjustment for that and trying to make it work by adjusting the cables does not accomplish that. Yamaha also has two different throws depending on the engine. Some have a push to open the throttle while others have pull to open the throttle. Investigate all of this before you try making this work.

Re: harness adapter

yes..I have another control and cables..I did not see any way to make that work, just wanted a cheap easy way to not have to pull new harness and figured there would be something out there..I am sure I am not the first person to repower from yammy to omc or visa versa. I did find a 6 foot yammy 10 pin extension for $35 on ebay, I could cut each end off and make an adapter for both ways, but I still need to find a cheap set of omc connectors. if you know where I can get some please let me know.

Try Twin City Outboards. They have a mountain of old outboards in the lot and would certainly have a entire control box and cable or perhaps even the cable only. To save postage, tell them to cut the end off about two feet from the connector and send it to you. They can trash the rest.
