Re: Has anyone used refurbished computer hardware?

Yes...Linux.

I'm new to Linux, and really want to learn it.

I'm going to put Winblows on my new hard-drive and Linux on my old one and run them both on a dual boot system. That way I can learn Linux and (eventually) dump Windows.

BTW: I've been running Windows XP for a few years now, and have not had one major problem.
It has been the most stable system I've ever had.

I credit most of that to my home built system.
I will never buy a store bought POS again.
My first PC was a Comcrap... What a pile.
I finally built my own. Wow what a difference.
Since then I've built 6 different systems with XP and they all run great.

H.

Re: Has anyone used refurbished computer hardware?

Agree - Compaq, HP, Gateway are not very good. But I have to tell you, I have bought hundreds of Dells and IBMs and never once had a problem with the Desktops, laptops or servers. And there is no way I could build a box with the features for the price you pay for a Dell. They buy the components at a fraction of the cost due to their scale. IBMs tend to be more expensive and less cutting edge but more reliable and easier to service. The mechanical design of IBMs is stellar and has been since the PS/2. Microns were really top notch but I have't purchased any from them in a couple of years so I can't speak for the stuff they are selling now.

As for laptops, in my experience nothing beats IBM thinkpads for quality and reliability. Toshiba's are far an away the worst followed by Compaq/HPs.

Re: Has anyone used refurbished computer hardware?

I sell 80% used components, mostly high end Alpha
(hp) server options and I have not had 1 bad board,
drive, memory etc. in almost 2yrs. of course this
high end eqpmt. is made a little better than PC
stuff.
Ralph is correct with "factory refurb." it's a
carp-shoot. good used items are better IMO as
long as you are dealing with a reputable co.
that does proper testing. I have seen more DOA
parts that are new/factory sealed. used items
have proven to work properly as new items only
have to pass minimal factory testing.

I'll pull together the specs and email you. Thanks!

Used the E450s as web and db servers at the company I started and sold a few years ago. At the height of the market the cluster cost me $1M for a half-a-cage worth of equipment! Those were the days :D

Hey Ralph...

Can you get any kind of price (dealers) break on components anymore?

Like guns, computer parts are no doubt tough to make a profit on, so I'm assuming even a dealers cost isn't that much different that retail.

I'm curious what the dealers cost would be on that parts I want.

Asus K8V Deluxe motherboard
AMD 64 3400+ (or the 3200+)
Radeon 9800 pro video card

I looked at the Opteron stuf, but OUCH! $$$pendy.

H.

Re: Has anyone used refurbished computer hardware?

I really can't and honestly I am not sure prices were any different unless you were buying in quantity.

Did you see this:
http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=3452777911&category=1244

or even this:

http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=2780457720&category=52475

http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=3453125853&category=3672

The nice thing is you can surf the FB and see what people who bought from them think.

Oh that is what I want to do! That would be a ball! I have to get back out on a range and an appliance shoot would be perfect!
