i recently found out that my gas logs do work. there was no outside tank but a line that fed inside. i went to tractor supply and got a hose, regulator and fitting to tie into line. used a regular gas grill tank to find out if they worked. i really enjoy the look and warmth of the logs. just wondering if anyone in the georgia area new the current propane gas prices per gallon. i can call monday if i dont get any answers here.

I've been using propane for 20 years, it has yet to drop.
Currently running around $4.05 a gallon around here.

Propane in the 20# tanks (gas grill) has not gone down. but bulk propane has, but you need a 2-500 gallon tank.

Ouch! :(

I just paid $2.59 and I thought that was too high, considering it is a petroleum by-product.

Actually I got that price back in October when I filled 4 100#'ers in WV (near Martinsburg).
That was after I got sticker shock last winter when it was over $5 here in MD.
I'll probably have to fill a bottle two before spring and a trip to WV is not in the picture until summer.

Filled my 250 gallon propane tank last week for $3.05/gal. Last summer it was over $4.50.

Ten to one (marbles only) you didn't reasearch that!

That seems to be the same consensus for a lot of fuel/oil related subjects!

A lot of folks take the standpoint that Propane, Diesel and other "by" products don't have to be refined and treated.
It sure won't stay in the liquid form it was compressed into without the tank it is in.
How did it become liquid and separated from the gasoline, diesel, or any other one of a kazillion "by" products of crude oil?

The same argument can be repeated for diesel fuel, people seem to think that any of those products are free and "left over" from the refining processes of gasoline, while each and everyone of those products is refined out of the crude it was, and then modified (refined again) to become what it is.

Some products take a heck of a lot more treatment to become a "by" product then others.
If propane were the main motive power, then gasoline would be the byproduct of propane!

Profit making is the intent for the refineries as they were lucky to have done in the last four years, as would be for any other business, but buying back the stocks they sold to stay afloat was a major expense and cost them most of those profits.
They spend Billions on operations and therefore make Billions also, But in general I am under the impression that they struggle just as hard as the next guy to survive.

Just saying....Fair is fair.:D:D

Not so, some products take a heck of a lot more treatment to become a "by" product then others.

Profit making is the bonus for the refineries as they were lucky to have done in the last four years, but buying back the stocks they sold to stay afloat was a major expense and cost them most of those profits.

Too bad it's just marbles.

I work for a refinery. How much research do I need to do? Propane IS a by-product of the refinery fractional distillation process. For many years, propane was simply burned or vented off into the atmosphere. Since It now has value, it it saved in pressurized tanks and resold. Grease is also a by-product of the refining also, but also it has commercial value also.

Since my post was comparing the relative high cost of propane, to the lower current price of crude oil (where propane comes from), why argue symantics?

Here if you go to a distributer and have your tank filled, it's $1.75 gal. but $3.50 gal. to have it delivered. It is comforting to know that the propane companys employees can get cosmetic surgery with paid leave on there insurance.

I stand corrected and humbled

Argument was not the intention of my, maybe harder then nessessary, retort.
I get those aguments in trucking all the time and that's why it irks me so much to see the use of the words "it is only a byproduct anyway" and it automatically gets my hair up.

I just can't see that even though it IS a byproduct, some people seem to think it is a crime to profit from it. Supply and demand has built our economies since day one.

As for semantics,...I got caught on that one! Good thing I said "marbles" :D

No offence meant,

i really dont know how those of you that heat strickly by propane could afford it. i lived in a 1200 sq ft house 4 yr ago, everything was propane and it was 1.99 a gallon then. i live in ga and its not that cold here. now i live in a 1800 sq ft and its total electric except the gas logs. im just wanting to warm the living room and get that cozy feeling. could not even imagine paying to warm a house up north were its like 10 or 12 degrees.

Well, its that cold here for quite a stretch and it isn't funny to have to pay the prices we have here.

I was paying an average of $550.00 last year about every month and a half for the furnace oil, and got tired of that real fast, so I spent about $1500. on new windows and another $2000. on all the related insulation, drywall and caulking and cut that bill nearly in half, so I did good there, I took out the electric water heater and put in a propane one which was cheaper at the time I did that, but not for long!

I installed an airtight wood stove which helped big time on savings.
The wood comes from the property here, but is an extra chore added.

There still is an urge, every winter, to pack everything up and move south so I can utilize the warmer weather to boat in and not have to worry about freezing stuff anymore.
Whether I will ever get to be able to do that is another question.

I just paid $68.57 to fill a 100 pound tank today so I think that comes to about $4.10 per gallon with tax in, if a gallon of propane can be cosidered to weigh around 6 lbs, and if you can figure a 100 pounds into 16.7 gallons.

But then again my 100 pounders one at a time last 3 months or better (about $22.85 per month) on the water heater (auto pilot) and drop in gas range so it cuts the hydro which came down to around $68.xx a month.

I dont think I am doing that bad with all of that, saving $1000. to $1500.for the season (our winter is 6 months long here on average), plus I am happier to use the propane for cooking, and heating my water.
I get way quicker heat recovery on the water.

But back to the subject....Propane is not cheap anymore.
A 20 pound tank was $8.00 from empty only last year, and now its around $11.00 to $12.00.

10 or 12 would be a heat wave. right now its -14
Its been a real cold one this winter. Its only been above freezing 4 days in 2.5 months.
And we've had lots of below zero days.

the gas man loves me.

At least we don't need air conditioning in the summer.
