I took my lower unit off to replace the impeller. I am trying to put the lower unit back on the upper. I got out my manual and it says I can spin the prop shaft to get the drive shaft to line up. When I spin the prop shaft I dosnt move the drive shaft. Any ideas?

try this which worked for me...
put some tension on the fan belt by pulling it and turn the motor by jaming a crow bar or something between the bolts heads. you just need the coupler splines to match with the shaft and it will go in.

turn the shift shaft until it slips in gear. Then spin the prop...

Re: Having a hard time putting it back together

On my pre aplah there is a lever or an upside down L on the backside of the lower unit.turn it all the way to the right and spin the prop counter clock wise. You almost need a 3rd arm or help to do it to hold the lower unit and turn the prop because you have to hold the shift shaft to make sure it doesnt slip out of gear. Also you should shift it into forward with the lever in the boat so that when you get the splines lined up the upper and lower shift shafts line up. I sit on a milk crate and hold the lower unit in place with my knee then with my left hand turn the shft lever into forward and with my right hand turn the prop untill the drive shaft moves ever so slightly not too much at a time. Then i try to slip the lower unit the rest of the way on. If it doesnt slip on I start the whole pocess over again.

I am tring to upload a pic of the backside of the lower unit idk if it go or not and please excuse the crude drawing around the shift shaft but the arrow is pointing to the shift shaft that you should have and need to turn. Good luck let me know if it helps.

With a GenII, I'm not sure I'd even attempt a lower install on the boat.

On the bench, I had to get a bright flashlight and a mirror and really work my head around 52 different ways to try and see if the water tube was going into the seal. It is stoopid in there trying to see.... maybe I'm just not a risk taker...but I could imagine that water tube grabbing the seal funny and distorting it, or sitting on the edge of it, and for the 20 minutes and $7 gasket it takes to yank the upper... I'd pull it off

Look on youtube alpha impeller change part 1 and part 2. There are some good videos. Sometimes it helps to see it being done. Use a c clamp to hold it while you confirm its put together right. Its easy to do with the upper still attached. You will get it.

That video shows the biggest hack job on an outdrive. Dont do what he did.

He used no sealant, never seated the shaft seal and I think he left the seating tool installed also he must have a torque wrench built into his arm.

Were the rotation of the fins going in the correct direction? Thats a pretty important step he never mentions.

Take the out drive off and do this job right. I bet that outdrive has never been removed and alignment never checked...

Impeller not propeller

Key way not Allen key

Anode not anoid
