Hello all, thanks for looking at my post, and any input you may have...
i have a 1994 evinrude 140, and am having some serious issues with it. After a full rebuild last year, it seems to be having some issues with running properly. After speaking to a local shop, I feel we are just guessing the issues, There isnt to much electronic to replace! It runs great sometimes, mainly when getting ready for a trip and testing it, but always seems to go to hell, when i take her on a trip.

in preparation for heading out into the gulf this past weekend shes been fine, when i took her out, she will run great for a few mins at WOT, and then sound like she has a miss for a minute, then that will clear up for a few then come right back. .

I have replaced everything from rectifier to cdi, and when i throw a new part at it, itll act fine for a little while, then go right back to acting up.

It cost me a major penny this weekend, when at WOT, it sputtered from 5000 to 1000 and i got washed into a oyster bed, and the boat took off again right across it, tearing prop and skag off. Im so ready just to give this thing away, but i know i cannot be far from having it repaired to 100%... Any input?

Are you sure it's an ignition problem? Use a timing light to check the plug wires when it sputters and make sure all the cylinders are firing correctly. Have you tried pumping the primer bulb when it happens, might have a fuel pump problem.

Daviet, Thank you for your response, let m e first tell you what all i have replaced in the last few months.
cdi, rectifier, vro pump(for fuel only, i premix) all fuel hoses, cleaned tank thoroughly.

now on to the newest findings.
I decided to run it on a hose, to be sure i had fresh clear water, runs like complete garbage now, as it was running, pulled 1,2,and3 off and it did not change the slightest of how it ran, pull #4 and it stalls. Appears to be running on 1 cylinder(#4) verify spark on all cylinders, got good strong spark, checked compression across all, i have 120 on all 4. so now i am thinking either a reed or fuel problem...

Check tempeture of the heads make shore close to same temp. Also check fuel pressure if it's weak you won't be able to supply enough fuel to each cylinder

I would try spraying some fuel mixture into the carbs and see if it picks up the dead cylinders. If it does you know you have a fuel delivery problem, fuel pump, lines and fittings or carbs.

Do a cyl drop test on it and see if you can nail it down to a cyl/cyls that are not firing.

I did the cylinder drop test while running, pulled 1-3 off and no change, seems to be running on #4 cylinder only.

i took the plug wire off and watched it spark across, then pulled the spark plug and watched the blue spark jump across the electrode on the plug.

ok, i took a can of power tune to the engine, it appears i am not getting fuel to 3 of the carbs. Gonna take the plastic "fuel rail" apart and see what pressure i am getting to the rail. I just put a brand new OEM VRO pump on this damn thing.

You could have some dirt in the carbs or else the high speed jets are clogged.

How can it be the high speed jets, if its doing this at idle? wouldnt it be the intermediate jets, if not the idle jets? And with these symptoms is there any possibility of reeds anymore? just trying to grasp a concept of this engine.
