If you replace a head gasket and you think you torqued it properly, but find out the tq wrench was inaccurate, does the gasket have to be removed and replace again? The compression is 10 PSI lower than before replacing. Retorqued to the right amount, compression went up 5 psi.

Yes it will. Did you clean both surfaces? Did you check that head is flat? Did you work from center out on head bolts? Post back!

Re: Head gasket question 2000 J130PLSSS

Glad I bought two, I has saving it for the other side. I'm not convinced it's leaking, compression is 110 and and 105psi on that bank. Yes everything was cleaned without scratching the mating surfaces. I've done head gaskets before just not on outboards. I didn't check head flatness, but how to you correct it if it's still assembled? Are compression readings over 100 a sign of a leaking gasket? The other bank runs about 120psi. Thanks for the help.

How did you check for flat surface? Take head off and with a piece of flat glass on table, use a sheet of 220 grit sandpaper and lightly move head back and forth a few times and then reinspect head. If surface shows low spots, apply procedure in till all low spots are gone. Take thread chaser and clean bolt holes. Torque to spect working from center out. Apply a small amount of oil to bolt pryor to installing. If head is flat and compression is low in one bank, piston rings maybe hung up in in piston lands. Run seafoam and then check compression again. Good luck and post back results.

WP_000436.jpgHead was not flat ( no suprise it's aluminum). Low spots were in between the cylinders. Sanded it out best I could. Cylinder block mating surface has some mild corrosion (see pic), cleaned as best I could didn't want to remove too much material. So I am ready to reassemble. The million dollar question is do I use OMC gasket sealer or not????????? I am not putting it back together until I hear from someone.

No do not use any sealers. Did you clean threads on powerhead /and bolts? Use anti-seize on threads Pryor to install. Work from center out torquing 10lbs increments intill you reach torque spects. Good luck and post back.

I just rebuilt a 1998 115. factory manual told me to apply sealer to head gasket. I learned the hard way when I replaced them before reading the manual and did not seal them. I got water into the cyl and had to rebuild it!

just to add...9.9..used "zizz wheel" to remove gasket material left on block deck < do NOT do this > and dipped the deck slighly..put "generic" head gasket on that had sealant on the gasket...water stream the diameter of a toothpick shoots out lower port side area..off comes head, call dealer,...says to try BRP gasket as they find them to be more compliant...do as suggested..gasket outside the sealing ring area appears to be much softer...install...leaks no longer...point being, if you can get the BRP gasket, I'd suggest you at least compare it to another manufacturer

If the head gasket has the printing on it saying "use no sealer", don't use any. If it's not there use OMC gasket sealing compond. The OMC manual also says to install the head bolts clean and dry. Any kind of lube on them will screw up the torque settings.
