Head gasket question

I have a 1938 Neptune Jr. Single 1.5HP 1A38 that I acquired from my grandpa a couple years ago. I had it running when I got but it needs a lot of work to run again. Mainly ignition work.
I need to make a head gasket for it because the old one rotted away. I made a new one out of a metal pie plate and some RTV silicone but it didn't last that long.
It's going to be mainly a display piece but i want it to run as well for when I go to antique outboard shows.
Any one have ideas on what kind of materials I can use?
I am very good at making gaskets for carbs and other stuff.

Re: Head gasket question

Head Gaskets usually have metal rings on middle gasket portion for a perfect piston/head seal. Better take what remains of old gasket to a gasket fabricator to make a new one. DIY gaskets don't last long.

Re: Head gasket question

some old head gaskets were 1100 series aluminum and some were annealed copper.

I would not use the copper in a marine engine (dissimilar metals), however for an industrial engine it would be fine.

Re: Head gasket question

The motor is not ment for marine use. It's a freshwater motor strictly. It has a lot of brass and cooper parts on it.
I'm gonna try some exhuast gasket material. if that fails I will try either aluminum or copper.
