. I was trying to tune my motor a few weeks ago which it is a 1989 50 horsepower. I have a couple of questions to ask. I noticed water leaking out of the lower spark plug hole. I pulled the head gasket today and it didnt look like it was bad.
1. Can a head gasket be reused?
2. Could water be getting in through the exhaust gaskets?
3. I looked in my manuel and the torgue specs were 270 inch pounds is that right?
4. How do i clean the water passages?
Sorry this long just lots of questions that im not sure of.

Re: head gasket

I've read here that yes, you can re-use the head gasket.. just torque the bolts to spec, in sequence.. no need to retorque after full warm up. Your water from the plug hole is probably the top plate leaking cooling water.. clean it well, and reseal it with a quality silicone sealer.. non-hardening.. the grey color seems the best.. ( not the blue vinegar smelling stuff.)
I've got a little drip from my cover plate over the #3 plug hole.. as long as it doesn't flow into the lower cyl. plug wire boot.. it's a winter time project to seal it up.. no big concern.. you're not gonna run out of coolant, there's a whole lake full of it!

Re: head gasket

Like he said, the cover plate could be leaking.
I use the black silicone, seems to work well.
The 270 inch#s equals about 20ft#s.The cover tourqe is about 7-8#s.
New gasket unless the whole gasket came off in one piece. If you had and rubber/sealer anything left use new(post pic of old)J
