Heat and humiduty vs Apint and Gluvit

Hey Guys,

It's been really hot here in the Lower Mitt. Nearly 100 degrees with 60% humidity. Can I still paint? How about Gluvit? I'm looking at brush or maybe roller. Should I wait, I really want to get the Scamp done so I can go to the Offshore though.

Plus I removed the registration stickers and numbers when I stripped the old paint. I can't go fishing until I put them back on. Zack and I can't go a week with out fishing, two weeks just might do us in!

hey Don--

i'll guarantee the metal on my hull was way above 100 degrees cuz of El Paso sun when i did my gluvit . it went on fine, seems to have cured OK. i was scared that pot life would be waaay short cuz they say 90 min at 72 degrees but it lasted til i got hull done....i did miss a rivet or 3 because i was going so fast for fear of it setting up in the can. i just followed up later with some plain epoxy resin on the missed rivets and doubt i'll notice any leakage issues.

Paint should be the same thing, depending on what type you're using. auto paints have different reducers and hardeners to be used at diff temp ranges, but i don't think Pettit and Interlux boat paints do. the humidity should help slow the drying a tiny bit to offset the effect of the heat if you're using enamel. i'd say go ahead and paint if you have good shade. you can always to a test patch inside under one seat and see how it works before you risk your exterior prep job.

you had me goin there....i was wondering if i forgot to order a quart or 2 of Apint and if it was critical for the resto....

I suck at typing! A pint or two helps the resto I think it's mandatory. I'm gluten allergic so beer is off limits to me. Rum's not made with wheat though!

Thanks B2. I really want to finish this project off. Off to West Marine for Gluvit and Moeller Zinc Chromate. I know it's cheaper everywhere else, but it's on the shelf and five miles from my house.

what i would give to have a West Marine 5 min from my house.....the Admiral might not be as happy, since i know i'd be stopping in too often and impulse buying stuff

I can answer that one...rolling Pettit Easypoxy, I got messed up when the temps in the shade went into the low 80's. 70's was ideal.

My wife use to be a paint inspector in a plastic factory. She says no, too hot and too high humidity. Next week it will dip into the low 80's. I'm on the fence here. I'm going to check with the Rustoleum people.

i think LL is right here, you ignore the Verdict and check with rustoleum at your peril..........

what REALLY is screwed by high humidity is varnish...not sure why, but all mfgrs seem to tell you not to apply when humidity is above a certain %

I'd defer to SWMBO. Plus I agree the humidity and temp combined seems a tad on the high side.

sprayed today and took it down a bit above 15% thinner and did just fine

Sunday it will be in the lower 80's. I'll do the hull then, today it's the interior. I know going against the wife is risky biz. "I told you, how come you never listen". She's probably right but, I don't know I'm going to roll the inside today. A little sand in the paint and away we go. At least Gluvit.

Maybe just Gluvit. I need to take the seats out anyway, that will take a bit. I can defer till next weekend for the painting.

The gluvit, or epoxy either one work fine in the heat, just sometimes sets up a bit fast, so mix a smaller amount. Lower 80's should be ok for the paint, maybe not wife, the don't like to compromise. Mine's not too happy with me as I e-mailed her this attachment. Should be a nice quiet day today anyway.

I order Gluvit from Wholesale Marine. $25/quart cheaper than West, it will be here for next weekend. It's 70% humidity out east here. And 100 degrees anyway.

Hot weather finally hit here too. the fourth we hat a low of 35, 3rd had a high in 50's, On Sunday it's gonna be 98. and keep going up. We just thought we were having flooding.
