Heat exchanger drain leak

Hey all! On my Volvo AQ125 I have a leak of some sort. I poured some coolant into the system and noticed it dripping from the petcock drain area. I thought the petcock was malfunctioning, so I bought a replacement along with a standard plug. I installed the new petcock and still had a drip. I removed the petcock and installed the drain with the same results.

In the pictures, I have it marked with the green arrow where it seems to be coming from. It seems to be a separate brass insert of some sort, but not sure how to remove it and reseal it. The bottom portion is wet, however everything else is dry, so it has to be coming from this area. The first photo is for reference as to where it is located on the motor.

Not sure what that insert is for I don't think mine has one, mine has the plug but not that bigger insert. Try sealing it with JB you have nothing to lose. Almost looks like someone did some work on that area: stripped out the old plug threads and redid it???

What you have there is a brass heat exchanger inside the tank.It is leaking around the seal. The drain plug is for the exchanger. There is a seal between the exchanger and the tank. You will have to remove the top of the tank and remove the exchanger and get a new seal. JB Weld is not a fix for this. Jerry

Is this a standard seal of some sort that can be bought at a general parts store, or a volvo part only? Volvo part number???

Re: Heat exchanger drain leak

It should be had at any Volvo Dealer. I don't remember the part#.If you take it apart it might just need cleaning or silicone to make it work. Replacing is the best option.Be VERY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!VERY!!!!!!!!!!! careful taking it apart. You can break the case and destroy the exchanger. Jerry

As it turns out, there is no Volvo Penta dealer here in the Quad Cities. The place that I thought was one, no longer is. Anyway, I pulled the unit apart and could see plain as day why it was leaking. around half of the O-ring was chewed up pretty bad. Went to the local autozone and bought a O-ring variety pack. Took it home along with gasket maker, then my wife finds the pack of O-rings from the last thing I fixed. :( The right size O-ring was in there, reassembled unit. No more leaky!

Thanks jerryjerry05!
