Jen lost her Grandfather this morning. He was a member of the Greatest Generation, who flew the F4U Vought Corsair out of Pearl Harbor, HI. Somewhere in Heaven, there's the roar of a methanol injected, supercharged 18-cylinder Pratt & Whitney R-2800 Double Wasp Radial announcing that another WWII United States Naval Officer has arrived.

Godspeed sir, and thank you for your service.

You'll be missed.

Looks like he's made his final approach and landing. Hope his taxi into the pearly gates was a smooth one.

Thanks for defending this country, ol' man! :)

I wanted to take a moment to thank everyone for their kind posts and PMs. He was laid to rest with full military honors, and with a Navy flyover in the missing man formation. The flag was presented to Jen's mom, with his Navy Wings carefully laid atop. Spent brass was given to his grown grandchildren. Thanks again everyone.

God speed Captain. - we just went through the full military honors with my wife's dad - (Marines, Not a pilot) and I have to say that was one of the most touching funerals I have witnessed. They also gave the brass to the grandchildren. One of the hardest things to watch was the presenting of the flag, Still brings a tear to my eye when I think about it.

Volphin: I just saw this thread-

My son and are part of Civil Air Patrol, and get to spend a bunch of time around airplanes. We also get some wonderful opportunities to meet veterans and provide color and honor guards for these guys. This year at the Great Tennessee Airshow we had a unique experience - there was an F4U at the show (a real live NAVY one). It flew a couple demos, and a formation pass with the F18 in the last shot. There was also a fellow (second photo) who had flown over 460 combat missions in the F4U over Korea. We managed to get him out on the tarmac next to the bird. The old guy was so blown away he literally hugged and kissed the plane.

People of our day and age little realize how much heart and soul the veterans of of great nation put into preserving liberty from enemies both foreign and domestic. I didn't mean to try to hijack the thread, but thought the airplane flying here in TN (I think you're here too) was appropriate.

Condolences to your family - And God bless her Grandfather for his service.

Thanks southkogs, and those are some fantastic images. I am in E TN, and almost made the airshow. :(
What a wonderful day for that vet. I also love the paint job on the FA-18.
