Hi there. New to forum but have viewed on and off for quite awhile. Lots of smart people. Have gotten quite a few good tips from here so thank you all for the informative posts. My boat a 1984 Bayliner trophy cc w/ 1988 125hp force.
You guys are going to get a laugh out of this so here goes. As I have learned from the forums I think it is normal for fuel to empty from the bowls when tilted all the way up on these engines. To combat this, because it really bothers me I have used an oil absorbant material in the spalsh pan to soak it up. This year, ran out of that stuff and got the bright idea to use a MAXIPAD to do the same. First time out this week a good chunk of this came loose and got sucked in to the upper carb. The boat stiill ran but could not throtltle up, so I limped back quite aways at steerage speed. I was going pretty fast when it happened and it bogged down, wasn/t sure wat it was till I got the cover off at home. BIG pieces in the throat of the carb/ got out with needle nose. More pieces wedged deep inside in what I guess would be the intake manifold. Able to remove the upper carb and get those out too using my shop vac with a small tube connected to it.
My freinds now call my boat the "SS Stayfree" (LOL) but heres the problem. I ran the boat again today. It seems th run as good as it ever did out of the hole up to give or take 4100 rpm and about 32-33mph trimmed. Idle is not good.
stalls out when put into gear not right away but kind of slow. If I give it just alittle juice its seems fine, but coming into the dock hard. I have to keep it at about 1000 rpm or it will stall. restart can now also be difficult. I have to release the handle and give it throttle when it used to just start kind of snappy. Carbs were redone about 5 seasons ago.

Re: Hello Everyone!

You need to remove both and make sure there is NOTHING in there.
Clean the carbs.
Do a compression test.
If you blocked off the carb for a while it's possible you did some damage to a piston.

Re: Hello Everyone!

Thanks Jerry but do you think there may be piston damage when it runs good at high speed? Also a little while ago when I was looking at it I noticed that the fuel that emptied from the bowls in to the covers on the carbs, the fuel in the top cover seemed to me to be a lighter green color than what was in the cover on the bottom carb.

Re: Hello Everyone!

Hey, thanks for the tip. You were right to pull the carbs. Just did, and I see a couple of small pieces in there too. Should have done that first! Anyhow will take your advice and do a comp test later today. Will post results. I am concerned that the change in color I referred too is water in the fuel that dumps from top carb only. Not as greasy when rubbed between your fingers as the bottom carb fuel is. This motor appears to have very low fresh water hours. Very easy on the eyes. clean as a whistle in and out. I can't believe my stupidity may have badly damaged this motor. Not sure what to do then
very upset at myself now. Will let you know, and thanks again for the help.

I would almost think this is a joke ~ Hope its fixed and running....but still, this is way easier to laugh at then some other mistakes.

Re: Hello Everyone!

Might want to remove the carbs again and take a real close look at the reeds, bent? stuck? broken?

Re: Hello Everyone!

Water in the bowls?? You'd be able to see it in the bowl.
It seperates.
Maybe just an illusion??
Like Rosco says check the reeds while off.
There can be a small gap while setting.

Re: Hello Everyone!

Okay, compression good in all 4 - reeds look very clean and appeared to be undamaged. I had a freind come over yesterday to adjust my carbs -he has alot more expierience than I do with outboards. I had it set a little lean - we adjusted the throttle cable some - it was not opening carb plates fully - adjusted the linkage - did a timing adjustment and now this engine seems to start and idle much better- appears to be much more responsive and probably gain some rpms and speed at wot.
Can't wait to try her out but everything seems to be okay - got lucky maybe after this incident. It also forced me to be a little more proactive as I have never pulled the carbs or anything before. I was always skeptical about playing around with these things. Will post again after I run it in water. Thanks to everyone for the help so far, and needless to say I won't be putting anything that does not belong in that motor again!!!!

Re: Hello Everyone!

Well, good for you. Now the only thing missing is to have a new sticker name for the boat. "SS Stayfree" sounds pretty good although I would recommend "SS Mangina" will probably be more appropriate as it eats ipads instead of squeezing between its sea legs! Lol. . .

Just curious, you said it was running a little lean. Could you describe his process for correcting the mixture?

Re: Hello Everyone!

Also, may be someone could also talk about checking/adjusting the timing too!

Guys it's probably better to just start new threads if you have questions.
