A spun prop hub, yes the RPM rise and no torque from the engine. BUT, BUT a worn clutchdog will sounds like you hit a rock or something in the water.
It will appear when you increase the load. Check the clutchdog and the forwardgear.

Nordin, as always, Thanks for the info!

I haven't had much time the last few days to mess with it, but I am wondering about this clutchdog thing.

Is there a way to rule out that it is NOT the clutchdog without taking it apart?

EXAMPLE:
If it acts up in reverse gear or in neutral - Cannot be clutchdog

Thanks

First check with a strobe timing light if you loose spark when it appers. If it does, okey no gearhouse trouble. Then you can leave the gearhouse. If it does not loose spark then check the clutchdog.

Did you ever find the source of the "hiccups"? I had a similar issue with my 1979 30 hp. It turned out to be the kill switch. There is a small metal plug that sits inside the rubber bell. At certain rpms my symptoms were the same as yours until it eventually got worse. It would do it at idle and then the motor ended up no longer starting. I pretty much troubleshot just about everything, only to find the metal plug in the kill switch worked itself free from the rubber. Quite scary for a boating newb on his second outing.

Invert the rubber switch and insert the metal plug with the cone end facing out and make sure the flange stays in the little pocket.

Just a thought.
