I've got a 2000 Wellcraft Coastal 290 with twin Evinrude Ficht 225's on it, and they dont seem to be pissing as much water as they should. Im positive one of them has a cooling problem because a buddy of mine had to run a diagnostic program for the engine and found out that one of the ECU's overtemped, in return shutting off the engine. We were not able to restart the engine until the code was cleared.
We decided to go ahead and replace both water pumps (well, at least the impellers) and the service manual does'nt give a very good explaination or photo on how to unhook the shifting rod that is really the only thing between me and getting the lower half of the outdrive taken off. There is a screw in the mechanism that runs from right to left, and it looks like it is holding the shift rod in place, but Im not sure and I dont want to go and screw up my engines beyond what they need be. If anybody has any experience or information on this, your help will greatly be appreciated. Thanks-
Doug

you are right you have to pull that screw it is a 3/8th head plus slotted for a flat head screwdriver, it is alot easier if you pull your side pans.

Dont forget to check that coolant passage that goes through the emm/ecu, if it gets clogged the ecu will over heat.

Re: HELP!!!! 2000 Evinrude Ficht 225 Water Pump Replacment

It seems as though the lines are not clogged because when I put the ear muffs on and run the engine, it pisses just fine, but I believe that is due to the fact that it has pressure from the hose pushing the water through. When we run them in a tub of water, the flow is considerably less which leads me to believe the impellers are weak, or possibly the sleeve on the inside of the housing is worn a bit. Thanks for the help!!
