This is my first motor. I have been through three people that works on motors and know more than I do. The motor worked when it was out of water with muffs on. I took to lake and it would not work! It cranks and cranks and cranks! I take the lid off to look at the carb part when I push key in as I start. As I push key in I notice a plate covers the whole. While I’m cranking I push key in for about 2-3 seconds and once stop pushing in and that plate open, the motor will start to fire up then stops! I have pressure, I have spark, I have two new spark plugs I looked up the right plugs. They are the alternate that will work it said. I checked and made sure the key thingy was in place on wheel. I will say that when it did start the whole it’s suppose to squirt water don’t squirt. It has a new little star thingy I think it’s called propeller, it’s in it. I use a little 3 gallon with 50:1 mixture. I looked up my same motor on YouTube and seen others start within 1 second! I’m so frustrated! Once it’s turned on it idles and sounds nice. Once off I’m back to square one!

Do a compression and spark test.

The pushing in the key: that activates the choke.
If you have choked it too much? the new plugs might be fouled out and won't fire.

Spray carb cleaner on the plugs.
Use a small propane torch and heat the end of the plug and get it hot, not red hot but burn off the gas and spray.

Let them cool and reinstall.
Then try to start again using the choke and fast idle.

Fast idle: pull the shifter handle straight out, about 3/4 - 1"
Then push the shift arm forward.
That should help start.

If all else fails, maybe a tiny bit of starting fluid.
Don't use a lot as it has no lubricating properties and can wipe the oil from the moving parts?

You do the compression test?

IF?? starting fluid is the only way to get it started??? use it.

Sometimes tilting the motor all the way up will help it start.
Put it in fast idle.
Tilt, turn and push the key, if it pops, fires, stutters, starts?
Drop it and just turn the key without pushing it in.
That might help.

When you first try to start how long do you hold the key in/choke it?
It shouldn't be held in a lot as that can flood the motor.

have the same motor. 1989 50 hp. jerrys right. the electric choke is a push on key. only push key if it wont fire up. usually only takes a quick push. don't hold it in.

I’m in worse condition now. I tried to start today and it was turning as if my battery was dead, then the solenoid clicks when I turn the key. I had my wife turn the key while I listen for it and the click came from that little piece. I do have great compression as we tested that before buying the motor.

Battery? Deep cycle?
Load tester, Harbor Freight 25$
Deep cycles aren't for starting, they'll work but can hurt the charging system.
Take the plugs out and see if it turns easily?

IF??? the motor ran after the comp test was done??
It can change the results in 1 minute.

So I went to clean and brush and unhook the terminals and the solenoid screw snapped off! This has been a nightmare lol. It seem brittle. So now I’ll have to wait and get another one.

ok wrong words. the ball and socket between throttle linkage and carb. the plastic sockets are stripping out and cracking.

Jerry, when it tries to start it sputter out exhaust the water in the tub is what I meant sorry. It’s right on the verge to start, like a little more of something it’ll start right up!! I notice something through reading about a screw I can turn that deals with mixture? (Pic) I haven’t mess with it because I don’t want more problems. Also when I hit the bulb to get it started, once the bulb is full the gas comes out the carb dripping. I have new starter and solenoid on it and when I start it, the starter spins the flywheel to the point that it’s running if I continue to hold the key turned to start. You can hear the teeth hitting as it’s going as fast as it can to start. I had it running once that I tried and the idle was high.
