Hi all,
my name is al forbes, I am the new owner of my first boat :D :D :D :D and have been enjoying cleaning it up and making it my own so far.
The boat has a 1974 Chrysler 55hp 559hg outboard on it.
The motor runs like a champ but have a few questions about it.

1. Is it suppose to have an air filter on the carb? I've looked through all the schematics and couldn't find a part number for one.

2. Is there a **** hole? I have the motor running in my garage in a bucket (its 30* outside in WI) and it doesn't **** anywhere and cant find a hole.

3. The choke solenoid doesn't work when I try to crank it over. it is only getting 1V to it while cranking which sounds low.
or maybe im just not doing something right in my start up cycle to apply the choke.

Thanks guys for any help you can give me

Re: HELP!!! 74 chrysler 559hg problems.

1. No there is no airfilters on OB. Larger 3-4 cyl. Chrysler has a airsilenter and it also work as "carbdripcatcher". But your 55Hp do not have one.

2. No there is no pisser/telltale such as Merc, OMC or other brands has. There is a hole in the middleg that act as a exhaust/idle relife/telltale. At idle you should see exhaust and some waterspray coming out and at higher rpms water should flood out from it.

3. If you have a Chrysler factory remote control the keyswitch has a "push in to choke" function. When you push the key in you engage the choke and when you do not push the key goes back and do not engage the chokesolenoid.

Re: HELP!!! 74 chrysler 559hg problems.

Welcome

1. Is it suppose to have an air filter on the carb? I've looked through all the schematics and couldn't find a part number for one.

No, Boats don't have filers. Inboard and I/O's have spark aresters and O/B's just have a air box.

2. Is there a **** hole? I have the motor running in my garage in a bucket (its 30* outside in WI) and it doesn't **** anywhere and cant find a hole.
Probably not, but I don't know for sure.

3. The choke solenoid doesn't work when I try to crank it over. it is only getting 1V to it while cranking which sounds low.
or maybe im just not doing something right in my start up cycle to apply the choke.

I'm no expert on this,
If the voltage is lower than about 1 volt below the battery voltage at the choke when cranking then I would think there is an issue. i would think its designed to run on 12 v. So you may want to test the other end of that wire also.

Its still cold here in MI too. Getting snow today.

1.That would explain why there was none for sale

2.Awesome

3. I have the factory remote control, and the keyswitch pushes in but I think it is broken. Can I buy just the keyswitch or do I have to buy a whole new controller??

ahh! fIRST OFF, DON'T RUN THE ENGINE IN YOUR GARAGE--NOT EVEN WITH THE DOOR OPEN AND NOT EVEN WITH IT POINTING OUT THE DOOR. OK--Enough shouting.

If you need a new ignition switch, you will buy a standard six terminal, push to choke switch. Available here at Iboats or at your local marine store.

Equipped from the factory, below the carb and covering the air intake would be a plate with a rubber insert to act like a mild silencer

Test light or meter. Ground, then hold the other end at the solenoid. Turn key then push in.It should light up test light.Test meter it should read 12v.
Possible the choke is dirty and not operating right. It gets gummed up and siezes.

Re: HELP!!! 74 chrysler 559hg problems.

The examples attached from 70 35 HP Chrysler (55 cover) that could be basically the same as your 55 HP.

1. Deep in a deep barrel might help to get more cooling water to flow.

2. You will see the water out the back with exhaust mixed and solid out Tell Tale.

3. Run 12V from your Batt to your chock solenoid to see if it will choke.

Re: HELP!!! 74 chrysler 559hg problems.

SOOO... I have been busy with the walleye run up here so I haven't been able to post again.
I fixed the push to choke key switch and the solenoid works great.
It was idling rough and I found a little leak in the fuel line.
After I replaced the fuel line the motor fire ups and idles like a brand new motor.
Only problem now is that the steering SUCKS
It is a lever steering system.
Does anyone know what it is called
Im thinking of switching it out for a little steering wheel
Thanks guys for helping me out

Re: HELP!!! 74 chrysler 559hg problems.

Anything's possible(steering).
Depends on the boat.
You have a place to mount the steering?
Pics?? Profile, location? You might be close to someone who can help?
