Hello all, and sorry to bring up this subject again. I am new to boating and beyond ignorant when it comes to boat motors. To preface this, I am running a 2001 Mercury 200 Saltwater series, the motor is 2 cycle carbureted. I had the oil injection system removed and mix the oil with the gas. I am running non-ethanol gas with a 50:1 oil mix.

I've been using mercury conventional oil. Today, I purchased Pennzoil XLF synthetic blend to run in my mercury. The Pennzoil is TCW-3 certified. I was told that my synthetic blend oil will ruin my motor and I should only use mercury. I am going out in the morning and trying to get an answer but I've had three different answers. The boat and motor were purchased used and I cannot find the owner's manual.

I would sincerely appreciate any help. Thank you!!!

Help - Another Oil Question

I posted this under the Mercury outboard board, but I am not sure if that was the right location.

Re: Help - Another Oil Question

The Pennzoil TCW-3 will be just fine......as will any outboard 2 cycle oil rated TCW-3 . Of course, MERCURY, YAMAHA, SUZUKI, HONDA, EVINRUDE (Bombardier) will strongly SUGGEST you buy their oil, but as long as the oil has the rating, you are good.

Re: Help - Another Oil Question

I own 9 boats all with outboards and run the Pennzoil in all of them except for my Bridgeport which requires full syn... I run the Penn full syn at 8,000 rpms all day long in that motor...never lost a motor...go to scream and fly and see how many guys run Penn because it is a great oil for the price... I was a non-believer until joining that site many years ago...I buy 4-6 gallons at a time at Wal-Mart but cannot find it anymore and will have to get it on line.

Thank you so much. I feel better now. I don't have a trusted mechanic and received three different answers. I really appreciate the feedback. Stay well!

I was told that my synthetic blend oil will ruin my motor and I should only use mercury.

BS with a capital B and capital S. I run it all the time and it runs great. Bought the '02 Merc 90 in '04 and have only been running it the whole time. Smoking is minimal and engine deposits, at least on the top of the piston are non-existent....course I run Sea Foam in my gas which helps to keep the gas fresh and the engine clean. I am an oil nut, have been all my life and when I can run synthetic oil in something I do it. It has proven it's worth to me over and over. I think Amsoil is the only 100% syn TC-W3 rated oil. The Penn semi works ok. Since it is TC-W3 rated, that's the only thing you really need to know. They are rated for 2 stroke outboard engine service. Merc didn't bother telling you who packages their oil for them nor what kind of oil it is. Wonder why?

Re: Help - Another Oil Question

Thank you Mark and others for the information. I ran the boat with Pennzoil and it ran great. There seemed to be less smoke, and the engine felt smoother. Again thank you all for your help.
