so im rebuilding the box under my back to back seats on my 22 foot sea ray. the old box was rotting. im going to copy the old box exactly but instead of carpeting it i wanted to fiberglass it. im goin to use epoxy resin to seal the wood, is it worth it to use fiberglass cloth or is the resin enough to seal it and just paint over that? i want it to have that smooth fiberglass look if i can??? any help would be great

If you want that Smooth fiberglass look to last more than a short period of time.. I would glass it.

2 coats of any kind of resin will not be enough for you to sand smooth and put a paint finish on it ( we dont even know what kind of wood yet :) ) .

Why Epoxy ? A few coats of poly and a layer or 2 of mat will serve you better IMHO..

If you want that Finished look..your going to have to sand and apply primer/sand/topcoat ..or sand and gel/sand/buff..

Your choice..

But thinking your wood wont check after a few coats of epoxy is silly ( unless your making the thing out of MDO ) .. You Might be able to get away with it ..but no few coats of epoxy is needed for topcoats ( WOG might explain on how to paint over MDO/HDO if you like ) ..

2 coats of epoxy had my deck looking like bar tops. It was a shame to have to cover it up.

It's a seat box....any wood is fine (plywood I would guess) and use whomever's epoxy you like, and apply it however you like, brush, roller spray, whatever. Sand it smooth and paint it whatever color you like. It'll be fine. I've rebuilts many seat frames from marine grade plywood and recovered in vinyl, with absoulety nothing on the wood and they last for years. With epoxy and paint, you're done.

I humbly stand corrected ... and will defer to the members that have had success in there directions ..

I personally retract my opinions/suggestions on this thread..

Re: help building seat box!?!?!?

If you use fiberglass cloth your seats boxes will be about bulletproof, but I just don't see it as necessary in this application. Just paint over the cured epoxy.

It happens :) :) Friends can disagree and still be friends....

Oh and if you want to add some cloth to the corners it'll help reinforce them, but again, not really necessary.

Re: help building seat box!?!?!?

If you want it smooth sand em now AND between each coat. The final product is ALL in the prep.
