Hello all. I have no clue as to what is going on with my boat. I have a 1989 Bayliner Capri with a Force 120 L Drive. I put a new battery in it...A marine Max from walmart and and Brand new stater. I was able to turn the motor over I would say about 20-25 times within a 2 hour window. Then it all went sour. The new starter got very hot. So hot infact it melted the plastic inside that holds the brushes. I had a old starter so I switched all the burned up pieces. Put it back in and it was working fine for about 2-3 more trys. Then the battery started smoking so I went to check it out and the posts on the battery both pos and neg melted. I am at a loss as to what is going on. Also both cables got very very hot. The starting selonid is brand new as well..Any suggestions?

Thanks
Matt

Re: HELP..Burned up new starter

Sounds like the starter solenoid may have shorted out and grounded itself across completing the circuit back to the battery giving the same affect as something falling across the post and shorting out the battery.

Had an ammo can fall across my battery post and melt them, welded the can to the post and burned a 2 inch hole in the can, didn't just smoke, it set one of the battery post on fire and melted a hole in the top of the battery.

Pull the plugs and see if it turns it over then.If it does then leave the plugs out and do a comp.test.Then post results.Jerry

Well lillbush! How are things coming along?
Have you been able to discover your engine problem?
Was it mechanical, electrical or both?

Re: HELP..Burned up new starter

Well I got a new starter and put that in. Cleanerd up some wires. Re connected the battery Hit the key and for the 1st time in 3 years She ran!!!!!!!!! Let her run and idle for a little while. Turned it off and tried to crank her back up and the flywheel key snapped. It is always something isnt it? Anyway I found that the flywheel nut wasnt tight so that was my problem there. Is it possible to go to the hardware store and get a woodruff key or do I need to order a new key from a sore? I just want to hear it run agian you know!!

Thanks
Matt
