Hello All- The other day I broke down due to throttle failure. (Seems the actual shift control arm is stripped out or something) All cables are intact. I was able to just get into forward gear and crawl home. Needless to say this weeks project is to replace the throttle control on the dash. I purchased a teleflex-morse model #490071 top mount w/trim, as this appears to be a somewhat "universal" model?? Anyhow, I figured I'd stop here for a heads up on just how to go about replacing it and maybe find out a little about what I can expect? I'm not sure of the cable type (Merc 200 1986) and how to go about hooking up the trim as well as the cables. Will I find a few wires to go to the throttle leads for the trim or is it a whole dedicated harness only going to the throttle box? Will these wires come from a harness from the motor with other wires going to the tach and other gauges? I noticed a harness of sorts leadind up into the throttle. Are the control cables easy to hook up to the new control ( cotter pins or screws maybe)? Must I unhook cables at the nmotor first? Etc. Etc. I am hoping this is something that can be done myself and would greatly appreciate a little coaching here.
Thanks So Much!

Thanks for the reply- but I had already looked at their site I couldn't find any info on the throttle I bought or anything similar. Just was wondering what was involved. Any help appreciated.

Re: Help Changing Throttle Control 86 Merc 200

Hello Again : Check This Out!
I got the new throttle the other day, went down to the boat today to hook it up. I followed the intruction book but for some reason when I first ran the motor in neutral it was reving up very high, much too high,like 3000 rpms. I will look further at the directions and my owners manual, but figured I would toss this one at you folks since maybe someones experience may have a simple answer. Is this now only an adjustment at the motor end? Would changing the places I hooked the cables up at the throttle make a big enough difference to change the "throw" or is this a NO NO since I placed both cables were it speciafically said to for a Mercury outboard. Also- the whole "Push / Pull For Forward" has me a little confused- since it was such a high neutral, I didn't want to put it in gear to see if my forward was actually forward- if you follow me.
Thanks .

there should be a trunion on the threaded part of the cable at the engine end. this is the adjustment. remove the cable, set the engine back to idle position, now adjust the trunion, so that when installed you move nothing on the engine.

click on enlarge picture, close to the right hand side is the cable end and back from that is the adjustable trunion;
