Re: Help choosing a gun

Lipp, the attachments didn't work, but I saw a 50 cal on TV once used to shoot into the engine block of a semi and stop it  I've also heard they can cut people in half... Jeez, I do doubt it's legal in jersey..

Thanks for the links yabuoy. :) Has anyone ever bought a gun on line? I feel like it's cheaper just to go through the local shop after shipping and tax ETC.

Re: Help choosing a gun

Mossburg makes a deer-shot combo. It comes with changeble choke tubes, 12 ga so once you have shot some empty you can reload with 38 round ball (00 buck) works great against an intruder, 12 38 rounds popping his chest stops a man dead. As far as a rifle have you considered a mussle loader? Black powder is cheep to shoot, and can make for family fun at the range. The best gun I have is a marble game getter shotgun 12 3/4 inch barrel, swinging butt stock, so can be shot as a pistol, 410 gauge so sweet to shoot. The 20 gauges I have are all full choke so can drop a goose at fair range, 3 22's 2 semi autos and an old marlin toe shooter, will never go on to a grandchild but to the father. As far as bb guns have one that shoots a pellet at over 1200 fps not a toy. Have a 270 that works as my hp riffle, can load with 90 grain hollow points with full mettle jackets for ground hogs, 130 grin lead NJ for well target, and 180-200 grain full mettle jackets for large game. The National riffle matches are going on next door they have some very impresive fire power.

Nah, I haven't considered this.. I don't really get what it is  Does that mean you load it from the front?

Re: Help choosing a gun

You can get a decent used shotgun for $100, and try it out.

The good thing about a shotgun for "home protection" as opposed to a rifle (as mentioned previously), is the shotgun pellets stop at the target, and the few that miss go 50 yds, lose all power quickly, and hit the ground.

A rifle will often go THROUGH the target, and may find an unintended 2nd or 3rd target inside your neighbor's house.

Same argument for why I protect my house with .45 as opposed to my 9mm. I also keep double 00 buck in a pump action "nearby".

The "wife as hostage" shouldn't be an issue, as the wife has her .38 on her side of the bed, and knows where the other 2 .45s are hidden in the home. And the shotguns.

But seriously, you never know, and that is a good anti-shotgun argument.

I do some of my own reloads to reduce cost, as far as the muzzle loaders yes you load from the front with Black powder. Fun time to shoot on a lazy afternoon, cost for about 40 rounds down range molding own round balls about $3.00 depending on powder charge.

For home defense, nothing beats a shotgun. Just the sound of a 12 guage shell being chambered will make most intruders crap their pants. For general plinking and target shooting a .22 rifle is good and relatively cheap to buy and shoot. It can be hard to even find an area where you can legally fire a center fire rifle. Lots of states have restriced areas where you can't hunt with them and a lot of ranges are restricted too.

Re: Help choosing a gun

Are there any websites where you can try to find private sellers? Like a craigslist for guns?

Re: Help choosing a gun

Also, I just called a local dealer and they said they had a winchester combo kit for $439 with an 18" and 26" barrel, but it doesn't have a pistol grip. It's in the black synthetic... does this sound like a good buy?
and it's pump..

Re: Help choosing a gun

you have to do some home work for that one, here in Colorado there is a site for just that reason. Craigslist does not allow the selling of firearms.

http://www.njgunforums.com/ Has a forum including a marketplace

Thats all I could find with a quick google search, if your serious about this then start by joining the forums, they can help you much better then we can since they have to live by the same unconstitutional BS you do(my opinion). Its hard for me to give you any good advice bud I just have a hard time understanding that you actually live in the same country I do.

As far as the price of the combo your looking at, it sounds like the going retail value of a shotgun combo, you can add a pistol grip stock I believe but again this COULD be illegal where you live, I just don't know. You need better advice from someone in New Jersey, the best way to get that is from someone in the culture in New Jersey and then verify that by looking up the laws in your state.

By Purchasing a firearm through a face to face private party sale you will likely save money but be forewarned there are those who will not sell to someone they do not know even in the slightest way(the internet), they may ask to see one or more forms of ID. These are to protect the seller as much as the purchaser. The biggest reason to purchase a firearm through a private party is that it is perfectly legal in MOST of the United States but also the government does not know about it.

But you need to research this stuff, your the one who will go to jail not me

Re: Help choosing a gun

Well, that's about the last thing I'd want

Thanks for the link, I'm reading up on it as much as I can. I went shopping tonight at the local outdoor store and looked at a few combo kits and some trap only guns in the 2-3 hundred dollar range. I also got to see an M1 grand which was all refurbished and was pretty cool... thw way in which it loads almost took my thumbs off though!

Re: Help choosing a gun

With a $600 budget:
Remington 870 for $400
Ruger 10-22 for $200

You have trap, home defense and plinking. Two great guns that can be used, abused and passed along. As for long range, an 870 at 100 yards is pretty damned accurate with the right slug.

100 yards, wow. and the rmeington I saw yesterday had a 28 inch barrel; and was 220... I'm also saving up for a motorcycle.. and I still have the floating thing sitting on a trailer in my garage that needs more $$$ dumped into it. I might hold off till I can get a pistol for home defense and just go the way of the trap gun now... The way I see it is any barrel is going to kill that burglar...

Re: Help choosing a gun

If you want to sharpen your shooting skills and have fun at very little cost think about adding a decent pellet gun to your collection. Even though I have both a rifle range and handgun range on my property 75% of my shooting time is with my scoped Gamo. Teaches sight picture and trigger control without the expense of conventional ammunition and not only is it great fun but it is good practice. Also great for keeping pests out of the garden. Modern air rifles are not like your old Red Ryder BB gun as the are accurate and powerful. (Though I still shoot my old Daisy I have had since Truman was president) I can go down to my shooting bench just after sunrise and play for an hour or so without waking my wife and do that every day for two weeks for much less than a box of primers costs nowadays.

Now if you take everyone's advice on what guns you need you will end up like some of us on the list and have a 32 gun safe and still not have enough room for all your guns!!

Re: Help choosing a gun

If nj would allow that and money permitted... I really want a barretta storm 9 mm rifle and there's another barretta .45 pistol I shot once that was really nice.. Well, when I'm 21 and can get a pistol... but for now it's definitely going to be a shotgun of sorts...

Re: Help choosing a gun

personally, for home protection, I keep a 12 gauge loaded with one round of rock salt and two "00" buckshot after that! let someone try to explain to the police, or the Dr, why they have little holes in their rear end and why it stings so much! just in case I can't get to it quick enough, a Ruger 41 magnum pistol with 210gr swc will quickly dispatch anyone who wants to continue to advance forward. with the right loads, it could also be used for deer hunting. I also have a 410 shotgun and an old Rem 22 that I have had for about 44 years now.

Re: Help choosing a gun

As for target shooting w slugs, I dont think you would like to shoot more than 5 or 10 out of a pump or other non automatic shotgun at once, they kick hard. Automatics absorb some of the recoil from more powerfull loads, but any shotgun is fun with skeet or field loads for birds. shotguns w Buckshot can be effective at 50+ yrds. A 3", 2 oz. turkey load would be a good home defense load IMO. I havent shot any of the new heavy metal, high $$ loads but I assume they are extending the range of shotguns. Shooting clays or skeet is alot of fun w friends and a friendly wager on who's the best shot on that particular day. For $600 I would think you could get a shotgun and a 22 rifle.
