Re: Help choosing a gun

Thanks :) Good advice. Man, this thread blew up!

I'm trying to start a trap club at school, but it's really difficult and I miss shooting. My range is like 45 minutes away so it's hard to get to. I really want to try turkey hunting this season...

We can't all be so lucky...

I was going to include a view out my window.. of the dirt and grime on baltimore avenue in Philly...

but I just couldn't bring myself to.

I could really use some fresh air....

Are you bow hunting there?

Re: Help choosing a gun

I can't figure this new software out at all

I was hunting Elk with a Mathews Drenalin Bow

Short trip due to work(freaking sucks every year work jacks my Bow hunting trip) we didn't get anything this time but we have never missed harvesting Elk out of the same area in Rifle season (mid October) in fact we haven't had to hunt further then 2 days into the season without filling our tags. In the pic of just the mountains in it there's a draw in the center right at timberline is a nice little lake, we have harvested 6 animals in that draw over the last 3 years.

Wow, I'm jealous :(

Philly is really dirty, just seeing how clean it looks out there reminds me how much I need a vacation  I can't wait to go away for winter break.

I literally plan on getting some turkeys on my 3/4 acre home in NJ. They're everywhere and they try to fight my dog.. and I don't want him to strain himself going after a turkey

Goodness Lipp - those photos are beautiful!! I used to work for a company based out of Boulder and made two trips out there years ago. I got to spend a day in Estes Park (wasn't hunting, but I did chase the elk around for a while). It's just fantastic out there.

Didn't wind up getting the beretta. But.. in my sociological class (Law and society) I have a teacher who is very opposed to gun rights... and I'm currently writing a paper about how there need to be more federal regulations on guns... and I feel sick to my stomach from spewing up a bunch of BS :D

Just my two cents

Home defense = shotgun. Every gun owner needs to be cautious what is behind the target. Plus...there is more room for error with a shotgun having a spray pattern (lord forbid you miss with a rifle or hand gun).
A combo makes a terrific entry gun. Allowing you to enter the field of trap shooting.
Shotguns are easy on the pocket and reloading is relatively simple if you want to go that route too.

Always loved my .22 as well. Fun and cheap to shoot targets with :)

WHAT??? I could not write that, I would demand to be able to write a thesis on the 2nd Admendment as a rebuttal.

Re: Help choosing a gun

I too agree that there should be more federal regulations. I believe that laser targeting devices should be mandatory. This would dramatically lessen the odds of hitting innocents. I also believe that the first two rounds should be Glaser Saftey Slugs, the second two should be FMJ and the final should be a Talon or similar. It should also be a law that you yell stop when pulling the trigger the first two times. They you should be required to pause for 1 second and repeat for the next two rounds. Finally you should be required to say "Good Bye" when puling the trigger the 5th time.

Gun control should also be redefined as using two hands.

Just bought a S&W .500 8-1/2" barrel with compensator. No need for laser on this gun, if the bullet don't kill them the shock wave will. I also have a Sig P220 with a 4" barrel. Sweet close in gun.

hahahah that's great :D

Yeah, Kev, tell me about it... It's a rough paper to write, but I know I wouldn't do well if I wrote my views seeing as the teacher is so liberal and open about his politics. But whatever, it's good prep for law school!!

For home defense I also say a shotgun is best. If some crack head breaks into my home my goal isnt to kill him but STOP him with one shot. My 20 gauge with a shortened modified barrel gives me peace of mind.

Re: Help choosing a gun

Fully agree on a shotgun for home defense, but the best home defense gun (20ga short, open barrel) is worthless for anything else unless you have a proper full or modified 28" barrel for more "normal" activities.

If you write that stupid anti-gun paper it will be good training to be a (deleted) politician.

Yep, I love my 12 gauge :D I have the 28" barrel for trap and 24" for hunting (Which I might try this break!)

Tell me about it, JB. what really frustrates me is that the prof's views get in the way of my expressing my real opinion for fear of getting a bad grade..

Re: Help choosing a gun

I'd say pickup a used Remington 870 on the cheap and start modding it. I sold my old stock on e-bay and used the money to pickup a synthetic stock with a picatinny rail to mount a flashlight. I also ebay'd a 18 barrel so I can switch back and forth from blasting ducks and intruders. The whole combo can be had for around 300. Bird shot is great for close range without penetrating walls and everyone knows the sound of the pump action. Just pump that thing and most people will bail.

Ruger 10/22 is also super reliable and inexpensive. I sold the old stock and barrel and picked up a Hogue synthetic rubberized stock and bull barrel for target shooting. Again sell the old and pickup the new cool stuff and it's pretty close to being a wash on the selling of the old and buying the new. Really flexible for options and you would be hard pressed to jam that thing ever. Just don't used rounds with a truncated nose as they may jam feeding. You can also swap out for a target trigger, 50 round magazines, etc as the options are endless.

On the long range side I like sticking to military calibers like .308 or .223 or 7.62x39. Cheap to shoot as you can pickup rounds by the case in full metal jacket for plicking. I have a Czech VZ58 which is kind of like an AK47 but with tighter tolerances and a more elegant design. The 7.62x39 round is ok'ed over here for deer hunting but expect the range to be about the same as 30-30. In the US i'd pickup the AK just cause you can.

In .308 I have a Savage 10FP which again is cheap to shoot and is a bull barrel for target shooting. .223 would be an AR15 but they are range only shooting over here as they are restricted.

You have so many more options in the US as you also have access to a larger market and your prices on ammo are sick :)

Re: Help choosing a gun

Oddly, your paper could be written based on your beliefs but it would not be sociological in any sense. Your (our) beliefs are not important in a sociological society. This type of society is based on logic that is derived from cicumstantial and often irrelavant but popular evidence. It applies most aptly to gun control since logic say's that without guns in our society people would not die by the gun. This is entirely logical and socially acceptable but.... the flaw in that comes with the fact that humans were killing each other long before guns came on the scene. Of course that leads us to the less acceptable but far more logical conclusion that people kill people with or without guns.

Drunk driving laws have saved more innocent lives than any gun control act in the past twenty years. Banning motor vehicles entirely would save hundreds of thousands of lives annually. Now there's sociological disorder if there ever was. So what drives a sociological society.. One and only one thing... Greed. It's the same reason you can still buy cigarettes in your local convienence store.

Put that in your paper and see what kind of grade you get.
