I’m hopeful someone can help me. I’m at wits end with overheating on starboard side of my 1996 evinrude 115 (E115tleda). I will mention this has been run 100% of the time in fresh water.
Last fall I had my tell tail stop working the engine over heat. I replaced the impeller and thought everything thing would be good but no such luck. It the tell tail now works. I found that the port side is cool enough that I could touch after 10 minutes of idle but the starboard side was hot enough to burn you.

I then replaced the thermostats and springs as the one on the starboard side was stuck. However it still over heated at idle. Took off the hose that connected the to the thermostat housing and it over heats before it gets to the thermostats.

Next I pulled the head, cleaned everything up nice and flat, replaced the head gasket, deflector tubes and water gasket(?). Left the hose unbuckled from the thermostat housing for testing. But got the same result.

so this is where I sit right now. Hopefully someone can give me some direct as to what to do next. Thank you in advance for any direction you can provide.

Yes. Tab up. But there was no gasket when I opened it up. Previous person who worked on it used some sort of gasket glue.

I’m going to crack it back open any ways to check the canals are clear so I will verify that also then.

Confirmed that there was only one head gasket installed. However, when I opened up and took a closer look at the top piston there is some damage on it.(see pix) The walls still look good. Is the damage enough to cause overheating?

Note----Broken rings is a fate that every one of the V-4 will suffer from.----Have them lined up ,about a dozen I think with same issue

I used to do this for about $1000.----But today it is difficult to even find a shop interested in doing this type of repair.----Most might quote you about$4000 + I think.----A rebuilt powerhead is an option.----I see a listing for a powerhead at $2500 or so.----Requires you to install ignition / carburetors.-----Your location ?

Pricing a new " magical " 4 stroke motor might shock you as well.----Be about $12,000 US I think----Or $15,000 CA if in Canada.
