I believe any 60 to 75 hp lower unit will work from 1975 to 2001

HighTrim. Actually, he cannot use the later style gearcases. It must be one from a 1973 to 1977 Hydromechanical style gearcase from a 65, 70 or 75hp 3-cylinder. The shift pattern is different between these and the 1978 & up versions. These generally have a VERTICAL trailing edge to the skeg, as opposed to the later feathered style as in your diagram. That doesn't mean that all of them will be like that, as some may have had new skegs, and some newer ones may have been trimmed back due to damage.
So, he needs to find one from a '73 to '77 long shaft 3-cylinder.... The two eBay units won't work.

ahoy , thanks for the info... i resantly refinnished an 83 sylvan ,ss. 16ft . turned out great new deck ,carpet, chairs, paint, live well,ect... the 70hp evinrude ,had carb. prolbems rebuilt them worked great get up to 50mph. on a good day yet can use it to toll for walleye .ect.. took it bass fishing , nelson lake n.d ,it has a coal burning powerplant keep water from freezing,so you can fish it late in the year, altough my wife did catch a 4+ lb bass . the water was low , i think cracked lower unit on edge of boat ramp? went ot winterize and top plug was missing and bottom cracked in 2 spots around gear case? is it repairable? i was told ,may be better to get used one altough mine looks better than most on ebay ect. thanks again for the quick response and great info,:D:D by the way how do you get higer rating ? at least seaman recuit?

Excuse my stupidity, ty for the correction Scott.

Boats, some can be repaired, depending on the severity of the damage, by a decent TIG welder using Argon.

You get the higher ratings by washing the mods boats in the summer :)
