I just bought a 70's Fabuglas runabout with what I was told is a 40 HP Johnson outboard on it. The model number is RDS265. Is it a 40 HP as I was told? I don't know what kind of fuel requirements it has as far as oil/gas mixture etc. Can anyone help with that? Also on the starboard side of the motor just in front of the cylinder head there is a cover with two threaded holes approx. 4.5 inches apart. It looks as though there should be something in there... anyone have any idea on that one too? Thanks for the help. Hopefully we'll be up and running soon!

rds 25 = 1963 40 hp
rds 26 = 1964 40 hp
there are none in my cheat sheet that have three digits after the "rds" by my sheet the only other size with "rds" was 35 hp in 58 and 59.

Re: Help for a new boat owner please!

I just double checked the numbers and it is RDS-265. I believe the motor to be from the late 70's if that's any help.

can you post a picture of it here? that may help some to id it. could the last digit be an "S" not sure what that would mean, 63 or 64 I would go with 24:1 (not sure when they went to 50:1) if its 70's 50:1
