I have a 1990 6hp Evinrude and need to replace or disable the safety button at the end of the tiller. My problem is I can't figure out how to take the dang handle apart. I've twisted, pried, yanked and pounded the tiller handle and surrounding parts from every angle and nothing budges. I've looked online at the exploded parts view of the handle and still can't figure how it goes together or comes apart. I was hoping someone out there has taken a tiller handle apart and could offer me some advice.

If you are going to disable it, why not just disconnect the wire? That handle can be a Chinese puzzle with the service manual. You break that handle, you won't like the replacement cost

Leave it there, and replace it with a universal kill switch and lanyard you can get right here. Search for Kill switch. About $10, and you can mount it on the lower pan of the engine.

There is a pair of wires coming from the tiller handle. Those are the kill switch wires. Run them to the Normally Open terminals on the new switch and you're there.

Quit pounding on that tiller. If it breaks, you won't like the cost of replacing it.

Re: Help for the mechanically disabled

Thanks for the help, but if I cut one or both of the wires won't I lose the ability to kill the engine? I'm assuming the wires are connected to some sort of a switch that opens or closes a circuit which would require a positive and a negative wire.

The universal kill switch may be my best option as the Evinrude replacement part is about $90.00 and as I mentioned, I can't seem to disassemble the tiller handle to replace it.
