when you put it in gear does it turn the drive shaft at top? it will jump out of gear easily without keeping the force on prop.

Remove the top cover and see what you find there.

Hunter04, The people on this forum seem like smart*****'s & some are, but it is all in fun. Fixing your boat will take time and understanding , time to read your manual and understanding it. Listen to what the guys have to say (especially Don). Have patience and get ready to spend some money. You bought the boat. good luck

Well, you got two options: 1. Get a new outdrive, what size is your engine, the gear ratio is important. You can try ebay, but be very weary and make sure auction states "in good working order," that way if it doesn't work, PayPal will give you your money back. I got mine on CraigsList, I took quite a gamble, but it paid off. 2. Replace the gears, but you will have to make sure all metal filings are out of the lower unit as well.

Depending on who you find to replace the gears, you might be better off buying another outdrive.

Drive was made on 8/24/89 as an alpha 1.84:1
It was never registered so it was probably a replacement for the drive that came with the boat
Good Luck Muc

no sweat... as already posted, either Ebay/Craigslist... or some small shop with little work may be your best bet (lesser labour charge), don't suggest DIY although that's also a possibility, I've seen some great deals on Ebay earlier this year, keep in mind your lower unit may be at risk as well, let the oil out and see if you get filings there too, evaluate how serious... **** happens
first off get the drive manual (even similar) to see what's involved (adults section)

Re: help I think I have outdrive problem

The overheating would happen after the coupler broke. When the coupler breaks, the water pump stops pumping. The overheating is the symptom of a broken coupler, not the cause.

WOULD OVERHEAT IF THE GEARS WENT TOO.
