Hello,

Aside from the obvious outboard motor....o:)

What is the item circled in red, and what does it do? It looks to me like some type of bellows, but I really have no idea.

Thanks for the help.

Re: Help ID Please

I guess I should add that the photo is from the right side as viewed from the back. The motor is a 1985 Mercury 18XD.

Thanks again

Re: Help ID Please

This little guy really has me stumped. Its not connected to anything. The top is rigidly mounted with a bracket the the pull start, while the bottom end has a small rod that is depressed by a striker plate attached to the throttle cam. I have no idea what purpose this thing serves.

Re: Help ID Please

Abit of research through some online parts schematics tells me that the item is a dashpot. What is it for?

Re: Help ID Please

The service manual doesn't actually say what this dash pot does, but it's supposed to be positioned up against the throttle cam. And according to the manuel the dash pot should be fully retracted when the throttle cam is at idle. So i would say that the purpose of the dash pot is to keep the throttle from snaping shut which may cause the engine to stall.

hope that helps

Re: Help ID Please

A dashpot is a mechanical device (damper) which resists motion via viscous friction. The resulting force is proportional to the velocity, but acts in the opposite direction, slowing the motion and absorbing energy. It is commonly used in conjunction with a spring (which acts to resist displacement).

Basically it keeps engines from stalling when you let off the gas quickly. you see it on older cars, too
