Hello everyone, I recently picked up two old outboards off of Craigslist for $75.00. One is a 1950 5hp Elgin that needs ignition work. The other is the one I can not identify. The only markings I can find are on the front of the power head. 251W and below that 05228. I looked it up and it said it was a 1941 Western Flyer 5hp, sold by Western Auto. These were made by Gale. When I found photos of these motors, none of them matched what I have in the Garage. Well I did a good check of the motor, gassed it up and it started on the third pull. Runs like a champ. Can you help me identify my alien outboard?DSCF2573.jpgDSCF2579.jpgDSCF2581.jpgDSCF2585.jpgDSCF2603.jpg Thanks

I give up. You might have better luck over on Marine Engine or the Antique O/B forums?

Yes....post your pictures over on aomci.org......in the "ask a member" section. You will get an answer.
To post your pics there you sill, first have to host them somewhere. ...like photobucket.
Good luck.....you can ask them there for the correct oil ratio....probably 16:1....
Never run those old motors at 50:1.....

It's definately '41 vintage and built by OMC. So Gale is probably correct. There are remnanyts of a decal on the side of the gas tank. can't you make out a name from there? There should be a plate on the transom bracket that will list manufacturer and model number. If that's missing you should at least see evidence of the holes for the rivets.
