Can someone tell me where to find the starter solenoid on my 1966 Evinrude Ski twin 33hp? The motor didn't come with the other end of the wiring harness and I'm having trouble figuring out all the electrical components.

Re: Help locating starter solenoid

I checked my manual and it said there should be a junction box which I cannot find. Here are pictures of the motor:

The solenoid should be close to the starter but from your pics i dont see it. It will go between (+) battery wire and starter. You will have to get one and install it. Good luck

Trace the wires that are attached directly to the starter. They should run from the starter to the solenoid. Alternatively you could trace the power wire from your ignition switch as well, I think it should end up at the solenoid right?

If you look at post # 2, the (+) battery wire is there, but don't see solenoid. It could be external but i am thinking it's missing.

I think you're right. What is the black wire that comes into the front of the motor (the one with the masking tape on the end) supposed to connect to?

That black wiring harness coming out the front of the motor should go to an external junction box, usually mounted separately on the back of the boat somewhere. The junction box contains the starter solenoid, and has another wiring harness coming out of it going to the front of the boat and the ignition switch.

I have the same year outboard. It is an external mounted starter solenoid. Mine was mounted in the right rear of the boat in a weatherproof box. follow the engine wiring harness and it will go to the box.

Thanks alot for the help everyone. I'll be keeping my eye out for a junction box. Is it possible to make my own if I got the starter solenoid? What is a good place to look for a junction box? Looks like ebay only has boxes for large HP tilt/trim units.

You can make your box or just install the solenoid under the cowl. There is no reason why it has to be external. Mercury had a similar solenoid and they mounted it right on the side of the starter housing. It was the perfect spot for it.
