I have a merc 9.9, and plan on changing the impeller. Prior to beginning disassembly, the manual says to place the outboard into forward gear. When reading about the re-installation, it doesn't make sense to me. It says:
1- place shift linkage on engine in forward gear position.
2- tilt engine to full up position.
3- Place gear housing in neutral. Propeller will rotate freely in either direction when gear housing is in neutral.

How do I do both #'s 1 and 2? I guess what I am asking is, how do I know that the shift linkage is in forward gear position, and how do you place the gear housing in neutral?

nuetral so you can turn the powerhead back and forth while applying upward pressure so the splines will line up and the lower unit can slide up into place.

I understand why it has to be in neutral, but how do I get the gear housing into neutral?

You would raise or lower the shift rod in the lower unit until it pops into neutral. When the prop spins free, it's in neutral...

Thanks RB, how do I make sure that the shift linkage is in forward gear position........move it up or down until the propeller will only spin in the forward direction?

I think you are getting mixed up withe the terminology.

THe shift linkage is attached to the shift lever on the powerhead. Should be in forward to disassemble, and re-assemble.

The shiftshaft is in the lower unit gear housing.
Should be in neutral to re-assemble.
