Well, I'll pitch in with a comment about the '96 4.3. One of my
boats had that year motor in the LX model, and while it produced good power and was relatively easy on fuel, its fuel pump and its water pump had to be replaced after a couple of years of service. I couldn't tell you how many hours were on the motor at that point - no hour meter. But the Merc mechanic who did the work said that both original pumps were not particularly well designed. So if you lean toward the '96 boat, have a mechanic look at those pumps.
