Hello everyone, I made this post to another part of the forum and it was suggested that I try other areas to hopefully get my answers. So here it goes... I recently picked up two old outboards off of Craigslist for $75.00. One is a 1950 5hp Elgin that needs ignition work. The other is the one I can not identify. The only markings I can find are on the front of the power head. 251W and below that 05228. I looked it up and it said it was a 1941 Western Flyer 5hp, sold by Western Auto. These were made by Gale. When I found photos of these motors, none of them matched what I have in the Garage. Well I did a good check of the motor, gassed it up and it started on the third pull. Runs like a champ. Can you help me identify my alien outboard? Thanks

Re: Help me Identify my old outboard

The Carb resembles that found on the 3 and 5 hp Gale motors. The 3 is a single. The high speed knob resembles that found on gale and some OMC motors.
The primer assembly also like that of the 3 and 5 hp.
unfortunately I can't help with a specific brand label.

I don't understand the question. Are the pictures you posted those of your motor that you have in the garage? If so, they look correct. Your lower cowlings are missing. That's not unusual

FR, The motor I speaking about is the one pictured. I plan on refinishing this motor without the lower cowlings and recoil starter because I like the look without them. I am assuming that these parts would be difficult to find as it is. I will most likely have the flywheel and gas tank polished and then try to find reproduction decals. This motor runs too good not to use it as a kicker on my boat. Thanks again
