Hey y'all -
I've got my brother in law going to look at a 22-foot Starcraft Islander for me - it's 350 miles away from me and he's ten minutes away from it. It's at a price point ($700) where the motor makes the difference in whether it's a good deal or not. If the motor is shot, I don't think I want it. If the motor's good, this is a really good deal. It's been parked for five years, the seller swears it was "winterized" before it was parked and that it has anti-freeze in it.
He described the motor as a 165 mercruiser, 250 GM - thoughts and opinions about this particular motor? I'm a I/O virgin, so can you explain which part is which? Is the block a 250 cubic inch General Motors and the heads are Mercruiser? Pardon my lack knowledge, but I learn fast. I promise.
Due to the asking price and the fact that it's been sitting for five years without getting wet or running, I expect gaskets and seals to be bad. I don't think I'm gonna be able to reasonably expect them to run the motor, check compression, get a marine mechanic to look at it for me. I understand that either way, if I buy this, I'm taking a risk that the motor could be shot.
So here's the question I have:
How can you tell if a motor that's not been started in five years has a cracked block? Does the "check to see if the oil is milky" thing still apply when it's been sitting for so long?
What else can I have my brother in law do to check out the motor?
What other advice do you have for me?
