I just bought a used "untested" DT85. He told me it was a runner a year ago, and I believed him.....
It is on a makeshift stand, with the controls sorta hooked up. The serial number is 8501 231 101, so I am guessing 92?
I can turn the flywheel and the pistons move freely as I can feel them with the plugs out.
BTW, the plugs look good. Is there anyway I can "jump" this motor by directly going to the starter terminals?
I have hooked up the "cut" battery leads but get nothing on the key. None of the linkage is hooked up, I am shifting into what I believe is neutral at the motor.
I was hoping to get some sort of life out of her before trying to mount to the boat.
I can't get the prop to engage, it just turns freely.
Would appreciate any advice as to where I might start this adventure ;)

Thank you

Have you checked the foot oil to be sure that there is some there for starters and to verify that no water in in the oil? And have you connected up the ignition wires properly? You could jumper from a good battery to the starter bypassing the starter solenoid to see if it spins at all. And also do a compression test if you can spin it. If there is a neutral starter switch, it has to be in a neutral position before the starter will work via the ignition switch. So there are a lot of things you need to have set properly to get it to run correctly. I would suggest to buy a manufacture's model, HP, year specific shop manual for it and read through it to see how everything works and why. Don't buy an aftermarket manual because it doesn't cover everything about your specific engine. Let us know how everything works out and with pictures as well...

Oh and I can't help but to ask, with your name, have you've seen Lumpy and the Beaver lately?

Well I would do all that if I could get that far....
I know I need to get some good reference material, and I will, but I had to tinker first, if you will. I got it to crank, but only with the plugs removed. I get real good blow out the holes, and the piston move great, but when I put them back in, it really labored and struggles to crank. How can my exhaust on a two struck not function?
I even put it in gear and cranked it without the plugs and the prop spun great.
Is there some way the exhaust ports in the head are clogged that bad? I get some air out the exhaust port....
I am really stumped, bummer, kinda feeling like Lumpy, dang...
